Nissan Engineering Section (N.E.S.) specified six- to nine-digit Part Number formats for bolts and screws and other small hardware. During the 1970s these numbers were replaced by regular 10 digit Nissan Part Numbers.

Early Format

[from 520 parts catalog C-037 1965.8]

Nissan Standard Parts (N.E.S.) N.E.S. (Nissan Engineering Standard) parts consist of 6 digits, arrangement of which is, as a rule, in the following order:

Kind(1-~9-59) + Shape & Material(◯) + Nominal Dimensions(Ⓞ) + Length(Δ)

For N.E.S. Parts that have been processed surface finishing or cotter pin hole symbols showing these processings are added to the rear end.

NOTE: ☆ Kind, ◯ Shape & Material, Ⓞ Nominal dimension, Δ Length

2. Distinction by Alias Dimension (Mark Ⓞ)
Distinction by alias dimensions of diameter and width, and apply 2 digits next to the rear of the digit showing Shape & Material.
[Table shows each code could mean #, inch, or mm value.
Later catalogs add these notes:
1. A. B. C. D. の 4 系列の適用については別に定める。
2. スタッのドの呼び寸法の大きさに対する??のつけ方は別に定める。
3. ?ビンにおいては? 1 杤の??を??する]

3. Distinction by Length Mark (Δ)
Apply 2 digits next to the rear of those standing for Alias Dimensions. However this is not applied when the length is not necessary. [The digits are in mm, conversion is to inches]

4. Symbols of Surface Finishing, Cotter Pin Hole
For the parts that have surface finishing or cotter pin hole, apply the following digits adding —mark to the rear of the above mentioned parts number.

                  Surface Cotter pin hole
Not processed 10
Zinc-Cadmium 1 11
Chrome coated 2 21
Copper coated 3 31
Phosphoric Acid 4 41

Overview

Also See: Nissan Part Numbers

NES hardware parts originally used a six-digit format:

Type + Kind + dimensions (d) + length (L)
  t-kddLL or t-kkdLL or t-kkkLL
  e.g: 1-10612
  Surface-processed parts had suffix added
  e.g: 1-10612-51 or 83-30414-1

Around 1968, the digit '8' was added to the beginning:

 81-10612

Finally in the early 1970s they transformed into Nissan standard 10 digit numbers, by adding a 0 to the beginning requiring two finish processing digits at the end:

 08110-612pp

Example:

  • 81-10612 BOLT, fixing timing chain tensioner support [B10 model]
    • Part: 81: Hexagon bolt
    • Kind: 11= Low carbon steel
    • Dimension: 06=6mm diameter thread (M6)
    • Length: 12=12mm

Example:

  • 9-16114 WASHER-lock to fix timing chain tensioner [410 model]
    • New number would be 89-16114
    • Part-Kind: 9-16: Washer, Tooth-lock
    • Shape & material: 1=Spring-lock medium thickness
    • Dimension: 14=14mm

Example: B10 steering column cover screw

  • 83-30414-1
  • 33= Machine screw, Oval head
  • 04= 4mm diameter
  • 14= 14mm length
  • 1= Zinc cadmium coated

Example: B110 steering column cover machine screw

  • 08330-41410
    • 08=standardize hardware prefix
    • 33=Machine screw, Oval head
    • 04=4mm diameter (M4)
    • 14=14mm length
    • 1= Zinc cadmium coated
    • 0= filler to complete ten digits

Metric

Nissan models use mostly British threads until January 1967, when in the middle of the month they adopted JIS metric standards across the board, starting with the R16, H20 and H30 engines. Thereafter the metric system was "adopted for all the screw threads of engine, chassis and body of Nissan's vehicle when:"

1. Model is change.
2. New unit is adopted.
3. New model is produced.

Although some parts still remained Standard threads (e.g. R16 cylinder head bolts).

For example, 1200 wheels are still 12" by 4" with a 4.5" PCD, as befitting their English ties building Austin vehicles.

Length Digits

LL digits = Length
Early form: n-nnnLL (likely to be imperial)
Transition form: nn-nnnLL
1970s form: nnnnn-nLLnn (likely to be metric)

Datsun fasteners started out using imperial dimensions (British thread standard). But more and more during the 1960s Datsun used some Metric fasteners, until starting in 1967 nearly all parts were changed to metric. Lastly, the flywheel bolts changed to metric in 1973. Only the oil sender threads continued to use BPT.

Suffix

For parts that have surface finishing or cotter pin hole, symbols showing these proceedings are added at the end of the part number.
