Overview

There are three main turbocharger companies, all the other brands you see are rebrands, modifications or clones of these:

  • VF IHI units are prefixed with VF
  • TD MHI (Mitsubishi). TD04 - TD08 is size. 14-20 is the flow.

Flanges are different to suit each turbo style. For example T3 pattern requires a T3 flange some of the common types are T25/28 ,T03,T04, then there is open and split pulse.

Flanges come in standard sizes, although there are many variations so always double-check before purchase. Turbo adapter flanges are also available:

Diesel vs. Petrol Turbos

Barpk: The main difference between a petrol and diesel turbo is its seals. Diesel turbos don't have positive seal turbo seals, which means that if put it in a suck-through system they can leak oil under extreme vacuum, which happens when throttle is closed. This is not a problem in a blow-through system.

Turbocharger Models

  • Daihatsu Charade Turbo. One rebuilt cost $300. The charade turbo is small so it will boost at low rpm and have low rpm torque. 1200rallycar ran two of these on an A12 A14 and A15, getting full boost before 3000rpm and had up to 15psi without wastegates.
  • 550cc Daihatsu Mira turbo
  • T2. Good size for an A12, but older design not so good for ultra high boost. On an A14 with GX head, the Pulsar T2 started to boost at under 1000 rpm and was all in with nothing to spare at 3500. It worked better with a larger housing T2 from an 1800 Bluebird SSS, that would start to come on at 2700 and rev freely to over 7500.
