The Hitach H190 differential has a 190mm (7.49 inch) ring gear and can handle about 285 lb. ft. of torque, making it suitable for larger V6 or drag racing supercharged 1200s. H190 is the strongest live axle Hitachi fitted to Datsun cars (C200 from pickups is larger), and is available with lightweight aluminium carriers and a variety of stock ratios.

Swap Notes

Several Datsun owners have swapped an H190 into the Datsun 1200s. The Datsun 320 pickup rear axle is one inch narrower than the Datsun 1200 unit.

NOTE:

  • There are at least four carrier types, which can only fit specific gear ratios
  • There are various incompatible axle types/side gears, so swapping center sections doesn't always work

H190 RING & PINION SETS

To install a 4.375, 4.625 or 5.125 ring and pinion into a third member equipped with a 3.700, 3.889 or 4.111 ring and pinion a 4.0mm/.157" ring gear spacer must be fabricated. Due to a smaller pinion shaft the 4.875 and 5.874 ring an pinion sts are interchangeable, but cannot be installed into third members equipped with other ratios.

Datsun 320 pickup uses a rear axles 50" in width with H190 diff -- narrower than a stock Datsun 1200 rear axle, making this a low-cost swap for high-power engines. But it uses 6-lug axles.
