Overview
There are three main turbocharger companies, all the other brands you see are rebrands, modifications or clones of these:
- IHI units are prefixed with VF
- MHI (Mitsubishi). TD04 - TD08 is size. 14-20 is the flow.
- Garrett models start with GT
Sizing
- A 1200cc engine needs a much smaller turbo than an 1800cc engine
- If you use very small turbos such as those on the Kei cars, use two of them. You'll get no turbo lag, and plenty of boost
450hp T3 (large flange) GT30 (good for 600 hp)
- POST quote: ive got a T3 on my A14 and boost doesnt start kiccking in till about 4000-4500rpm
Flanges
Flanges come in standard sizes, although there are many variations so always double-check before purchase. Turbo adapter flanges are also available:
BOLT PATTERN T2 (T25) 2.87 x 1.58 T3 (TD03) 3.40 x 1.75 T4 (TD04) 3.25 x 2.75 Subaru 3-bolt
Turbocharger Models
- Daihatsu Charade Turbo. One rebuilt cost $300. The charade turbo is mall so it will boost at low rpm and have low rpm torque. 1200rallycar ran two of these on an A12 A14 and A15, getting full boost before 3000rpm and had up to 15psi without wastegates.
- 550cc Daihatsu Mira turbo
- T2. Good size for an A12, but older design not so good for ultra high boost. On an A14 with GX head, the Pulsar T2 started to boost at under 1000 rpm and was all in with nothing to spare at 3500. It worked better with a larger housing T2 from an 1800 Bluebird SSS, that would start to come on at 2700 and rev freely to over 7500.
- Nissan Pulsar EXA
- FIAT Uno Turbo
- LD20T JDM
- TD04 (from WRX/Forester 2 liter) is good for 220-280 hp. Was a little laggy with A12 driving it around the block and having to slow down a lot on the corners in 1st gear. But when on the track full boost came about 3500-4000. A bit laggy but went like a freight train.
- CT12 Toyota turbo
- Z18T on A12 to A15 spool up well
- T25 is large for a stock A15
- CA18DET
- 1.6 VW diesel KKK
- KKK K03, very close in size to a T2
- 1.8 litre Audi
- very small for a 1.8 litre motor
- GT17 are just about the smallest ball-bearing turbos you can get from Garrett. Cheap and use T2 flange.
- late model Saab
- GT15 garrett cheap and works well
- Garrett from a Merc VITO Van, a tad bit bigger than a T2. 3rotor reported very good response with an A15
- EX-AR= 0.43 IN-AR= 0.45
