Datsun 520 Truck was produced from 1965 to 1968. The minor model change came in 1968 with the updated 521. The 521 and L521 continued to use the J13 engine until the Premium-engined PL521 was introduced for North America.

L16

Same as Datsun 510. L16 started 1969-1/2. All 1968 521 had J13 engine, as well as early 1969.

To fit the L16 drivetrain Datsun made these changes:

  • changed motor mounts
  • changed transmission mount
  • changed 3rd frame crossmember
  • smaller, simpler idler arm

Early 521: the J13 sheet metal for the radiator is easy to remove and allows you to drop L-series engine into, it even has the holes for the L series radiator install. Engine mount brackets and isolators differ as does rear tranmission mount bracket. These brackets bolt to the frame.
