Early Datsun 1200 brochures and advertisements — for the Japan market — featured a man, a boy, and a goose.

This brochure has the Goose image. Notice the little orange/yellow box, in it is the man & boy with goose as seen in the JDM TV commercial.

鵞鳥 goose
(gachou/gachō)

Often accompanied by the tagline「隣りのクルマが小さく見える」 ("The car next to it looks small"). In much the same way the boy looks small to the man, and the goose looks up to the boy.

WHY THE PET GOOSE? I have no idea, but it appears to have been a marketing theme along with the father/son symbols. For example, it was used on B110 documents such as this Nissan Information book:
