Cam Followers, commonly called Lifters or tappets, are between the camshaft and the pushrods.

Overview
The camshaft pushes up on the lifters, opening the valves.
Installation/Replacement
Always use new lifters with a new or rebuilt camshaft, and follow the break-in procedure.
Inspect for Damage
Good lifter on right, bad lifter on left.
Cam lobe worn due to insufficient lubrication (or incorrect break-in)
Large Diameter Lifter
At right is the standard valve lifter, but the umbrella diameter is not enough in the cam where the lift quantity is large. The left's umbrella diameter is larger:
