The stock radiator is adequate, but can be marginal on the hottest summer days over 100F or 33C. Upgrades include using larger B210 or B310 units.

1200 core support can handle a radiator up to approximately 445x695 mm

The 1200 bolt spacing is:
* 250 mm (9.84 inch) vertical - same as B210
* 370 mm (14.57 inch) horizontal

If I fit a large radiator, does the core support need a bigger hole cut in it? NO

  • The auxiliary hole sheet can be removed
  • the large radiator can be partly behind the sheet metal

Copper/brass cores would be more efficient if the cores where made the same dimensions.

The alluminium cores are usually made with thicker tubes(more tube to fin contact for a given core depth) This is where the increase in efficiency is over the copper/brass core. The copper/brass cores cant be made this way because the thin walled tube cant handle the pressure, and over time the tubes try to become more round swelling the core. You sometimes see copper/brass radiators that are bulging at the sides, often pushing the steel straps off. This bulging also often pulls the end tubes out of the header plates(very hard to fix).

The alluminium core doesnt have this problem because the tube side walls are thicker and because of the brazing used to hold it all together.

The ally cores are less likly to be holed from stones etc. but if they do get holed they are nearly impossable to repair.

All B210 and B310 radiators are same height as 1200 radiators. Plus they come with shrouds as standard equipment.

To fit the wider radiator you can use a simple flat adapter bracket:

B210 1974 is same size as B110 (1.7 liter), but B210 with A14 radiators are wider. There is one size wider radiator, in AUTO (with AT cooler lines, 2.5 liter)) and two manual part numbers (2.7 liter, which vary slightly).

Pulsar Radiators

  • N10 Pulsar radiators do not mount flat.
  • N12 Pulsar 1.3 core size: 330 X 478 X 33 mm
  • N12 Pulsar NX 1.6 core size: 329 x 478 29 mm
  • KN13 Pulsar NX 1.8: 348 x 591 x 32mm + 35 copper/brass; top-right, bottom-left; pin mount-bottom, bracket mount-top

The later Pulsar radiators are monstrously large, but good for a CA-series engine.

N14/N15/B14

N14/N15 and B14 radiators are inexpensive -- about $70 at RockAuto.com. They are:

  • all similar with outlets top right and bottom left
  • have pin mounts top & bottom
  • come in three sizes: Medium, Large and Gigantic
  • Most are much much thinner than a stock 1200 radiator (half as thin)
  • Some are thicker, the 26mm versions are good for 2-liter engines
  • The SR20DET version is thickest (32mm)
  • Largest versions will just fit in a 1200
  • Pretty much identical to s13 unit, except for cap and outlet locations

Brand new aluminum radiator, $43 USD

The hot tip for modified or competition is a Brand new aluminum radiator, $43 USD: 1986 Volkswagen Golf radiator, narrow version that is 24" wide. The AC models have a wider radiator.

did the gemi radiator swap finnaly today ... used a 120y top hose and the stock botoom hose. It now runs at 170 deg faranheight all day except stopped in heavy bumper to bumpertraffic where it reaches 185 deg

If buying used, make sure the flow is good before you install it! Many older radiators are partially blocked. Perform a simple Flow Test.

Sigma

Sigma radiator is similar to 1200 but wider. Reportedly is too tall for a Datsun 1000. It may just fit uder the bonnet of a 1200 ... its pretty tall. And since it was designed for a 2.6 engine, it is big enough to cool an A14/A15.
