Looks very much like JDM grille I have, except...JDM version have different badge in the middle and it have separate headlight surroundings.
That kind of grille was used on all JDM sedans 1972->.

@Velociti
Why don't you use this grill? It would look good on the bakkie.

@Dodgeman
As far as I know all South African datsun 1200's were assembled here in South Africa's factory.My engine bay plate says it.
We also had 1200 coupe GX's that used the same grill. I have never seen any other grill on the GX's.

OK, if this JDM Sedan grille was used only on ZA 1200 GX models, then i've just learned something more.

I now assume that all the non GX sedans used the regular metal grille [right up to 1976/'77?] & that non GX coupes used the regular coupe grille, but all GX models, both Coupes & Sedans used this particular grille, making it the defacto South African GX identifier.

As can be seen in various brochures, this grille was seen on JDM facelift model GL sedans. I do not yet know if it was used on all JDM sedans from about mid 1972.

As far as I know all GX's in ZA had this Grill.

All GX's below are from ZA.

 Re: GX Grill 1
Since this sedan grille did not appear untill the JDM facelift of 1972 we can assume that all of the ZA 1200 GX sedans so far identified would have been made sometime after the middle of '72.

I would be interested to know if this grille was used in production only after the previous passenger model grille was no longer made [end 1973] or from when it was introduced in Japan [mid '72]
To have been used in a 1200 from 1974 onwards is not impossible in South Africa as the 120Y [B210] was not made there & the trusty 1200 soldiered on in manufacture untill 1977 I believe.

All export GX models went without the facelift bonnet/hood & since the hood for South African cars was [presumably] manufactured in the South African factory, it stands to reason that the facelift hood was not there used on both economic & policy grounds.

If the coupe was offered as a GX in South Africa, then it would have used the coupe grille & not this one.

I've seen you say that 120Y's weren't built here before, but my grandma owned 2 120Y's, one was a 120Y Deluxe, and the other a 120Y SDX. Just this morning I drove past one in traffic again. 120Y's were built and sold in ZA.

EDIT: A quick search on the net only dug up this link Moby 302 good time line of all Datsuns and I think other makes ever built and sold in ZA...

I thought B210 wasn't sold in South Africa ,but I'm probably wrong

In Australia, "120Y" name was only associated with B210. However, in many other countries, B310 with A12 engine was named "120Y", although they are different generations.

Which kind of 120Y did grandma have? B210 or B310? Or B120 pickup?

 Re: GX Grill 1
It was the B210, coincidently she owned 3, 2 being the 120Y's and 1 the 140Y SDX(running an A14). Then she also owned a 1600 B510, of which I posted a picture elsewhere on this site. I have been digging through old pictures to see if we ever took any pictures with one of them in it, but haven't foudn anything yet.

Wikipedia has an entry about the B210, and mentions the B210 120Y of ZA, strangely they mention the ones Tyrie like, 140Z/L14 and 160Z/L16, but not the 140Y/A14 one... Wikipedia 120Y

My car was also the 1200 GX, and also had the grill like the picture above. As Hendrik said, I haven't seen SEDAN GX's with any other grill, it was only the Coup

This is the 1972/73 facelift sedan grille. This part must have been sourced directly from Japan & not manufactured in ZA as it's the JDM item.

Hmm...I thought the "facelift" was Japan-only. But now I see the South Africa models used the facelift grille too:
