Strictly speaking, the illustrated example is a flatbed truck, or tray-back if you prefer. It's a little one, but it is a truck none the less.
The version that most think is a ute, is actually a pickup. This model was never made as a ute.
The Datsun 1200, however, is a true ute in the same way that a current Commodore comes as a ute, but the Falcon is a pickup.

Calling these pickups "ute's" is exactly the same as refering to a Datsun two door sedan as a coupe. Similar general description, same task in life, but diferent bodies with diferent names.
The ute is a true Aussie icon & i would like to think that ElCamino & Ranchero owners know this.

P.S. Did anyone notice the 1939 or '40 Ford coupe in the background?

Yep Dodgeman you are correct at ute is of unitary contruction without a separate bed, I'll correct the title.
