This is the secret to it all. The optic trigger.

The windowed ring under the rotor passes through the gap in the optic trigger & this is the heart of the system. The cam now does nothing at all.
I built this one up about 10 years ago to use in my 1200GX engine, but never got round to it. It's still new.
Its a clever little thing, but it's unlikely that i will ever use it as Feral will be supplying me with a modified Bluebird electronic distributor as soon as i send him some stuff.

How come you don't want to use it when you already have it. Does it not work or something?

Because it is an aftermarket item [Lucas], replacement parts that are specific to the conversion are not readily available. I don't want to suffer a component failure far from home with no hope of fixing it.

By using the Bluebird distributor, i get the higher output from this "Hi-Energy" system, plus, it's a Nissan / Datsun component, so service parts are readily available from Dealers, Replacement parts outlets, & Wrecking yards.

This conversion really only replaces the points without boosting coil output. The Bluebird system allows significantly higher output, which in turn allows wider plug gaps. By using NGK Platinum, or Gold Paladium plugs, the gap can be opened even more. These plugs require less voltage to fire across a given gap at a given compression pressure. Big gaps assure better combustion. I like that.

There is no mechanical, or electrical defect with this distributor.

Dodgeman this is actually a Hall Effect Pulse Generator not an Optical Pulse Generator. This one works on Magnetism. When the Vanes on the "Trigger Wheel" ( correct term of which I am sure you would like to make note of to prevent confusion) pass inbetween the Magnet and the Hall I.C., the lines of magnetism are broken between the Magnet and the Hall I.C.. This causes the Hall I.C. to become open circuit.
On an Optical Pulse Generator the Vanes on the Trigger Wheel pass inbetween an LED and a Phototransistor.

I stand corrected. I should have known better, but at least, now i do.
I thank you for the constructive critique.
I'm obviously not as clever as i think i am.

As a side note, long long ago when one of the big name US makers of aftermarket ignitions [Spalding i think] were developing their own "pointless" system, they went for the optic trigger design. The finished product was called the "BDI" ignition, but they would not tell anyone what the letters B D I meant.

Quite some time later, all was revealed. When the early experiments were being carried out in the lab, the engineers felt that the little red light, that was seen only through the slots in the rotating wheel, looked for all the world like a little red "beady eye", & so the BDI name was born.
Well, I thought it was interesting.

I don't see a trigger wheel in this photo ... is it under the plate? It looks similar to the Pertronix system.

Btw, an iron trigger wheel is called a "reluctor".
