this point is fairly obvious... the mazda is sorta different because you can take the tray off, unlike the others.

That ute is a Datsun 1500, and a nice one at that.

Did they get L series over there, or is that a transplant? If they did, was there a 1.5L L? or is that just the name for them over there. Here they just call 'em 620 pickups. This isn't a "ute" by definition (according to dodgeman) but there was a ute version that seated 4 with a really short bed. The "bullet" shape you see at the tail end of the door continued down the entire bed and gave it really nice lines.

I believe they copped a J15 - some strange variant of an A15 - sorry I can't divulge more info - anyone else?

Over hear in the states that is a 620 pickup, the beds are removable unlike what I can tell from the 1200 utes. And that looks like a L series, which as far as I know they came in a 1.4,1.6,1.8,2.0 version in the 4 cylinder models. Another name that I have heared them called "Bullet sides"

 Re: Ute comparison (datsun,mazda,toyota)
I know it's an old thread but it needs clarification.

The vehicles that have removeable 'well' type cargo beds are pickups. If it's built on a passenger car chassis then it's a passenger car derivitive & is a straight out "pickup", but if it's built on a commercial model chassis that is not passenger model derived, then [technically] it's a "pickup truck."
Pickups can really only be built on a chassis, or as has become the practice in Australia in the last few years, a half chassis with a monocoque cabin/shell.

Utes can be built either on a chassis or as a complete monocoque body shell & have a one piece body panel from the rear of the door opening to the tail light area of the cargo well.
