If anything having first there is better as I find I only use it to get under way. On tight corners you tend to I. Ever drop back to 2ND any way so 2ND to 3Rd is directly down not up and across

 Re: 63A Transmission for A-series Engine Big boy is quite right. The reason these are so strong is 'cos they are so bloody heavy. Lifting mine in on my own my ass was hanging out so far you could cut washers off it!
