 Re: flying dattos Who has already been answered in the thread, but where? Amaroo Park in Sydney, probably on the dirt motorbike circuit they had. The first special stage used to be around all the property, using the car dirt curcuit, the motobike dirt track, the hillclimb & the main circuit. Thats what it looks like to me. This would probably make it the 2GO rally, which was run around the NSW central coast near Gosford.

Re: flying dattos I've just come across these photos and can shed some light on their origins.
Yes, the Datsuns are the 'works' Nissan Stanza or 160J. The event is the 1979 Southern Cross Rally and the location is the dirt cricuit at Amaroo Raceway, first stage of that 4 day event.
The Stanza #4 is multiple Australian Champion Ross Dunkerton. The 2nd photo is Wayne Bell is a Holden Gemini (with a turbo), the 3rd photo is Finnish ace Rauno Aaltonen in another Datsun Stanza and the final photo is Sydney privateer, Frank Neale is an LA Lancer.
This is the year that World Champion Bjorn Waldegaard was brought out to run in a BDA Escort team with Greg Carr and Colin Bond but to no avail - the Stanzas won again to follow up their victories in 1977 and 1978.
This is clearly NOT the mineshaft section fron Canberra, which is a very steep downhill drop. Both Stnzas are part of a 4 car 'works' Nissan team, the other drivers being Harry Kallstrom and George Fury. Geoff Portman was not drafted into the works team at this time. I think you'll find that the LZ twin cam engine were not used this year as these had proved unreliable in previous years on the Southern Cross.
The 1976-1979 Southern Cross Rallies are available on video and they are remarkably good productions for their time. Nissan/Datsun were very serious about their comittment to rallying in those days and that level of committment can be seen in these videos!

Re: flying dattos I agree with 'Snooksie' and can confirm that it is NOT the mineshaft in Canberra. The mineshaft is sooooooo much steeper than that.
These are real 'works cars' and were known at the time in the international rally community as Datsun Violets.
Exceptionaly strong quick rally cars.
A genuine works 5 speed gearbox from one of these cars was sold during 2003 for $3600 Oz dollars even after it had been sitting in some guys shed for nearly 10years.
Any parts from these cars are worth their weight in gold.

It was taken at the mines section of a rally out in the Brindabellas outside Canberra.
This picture came up on another forum. There were a few more of different cars but none were 1200's so I didn't put them up. A few didn't land as well as this one is going to...

Re: flying dattos It's one of the works stanzas. Judging by the International colours, this one is probably driven by Rauno Aaltonen. Other works Datsun drivers were George Fury and Geoff Portman. These works cars used the Lz factory twin cam head for the L series engine, which was developed to take on the BDA Escorts.
Feral would probably know more about these cars.

Re: flying dattos Yep it's definately a works Stanza/160J. But Where the photo is from is puzzling. The nuber plate shows Travelodge sponsership which we have in NZ what about OZ??? It could be one of the Pommy entered cars driven by the late Tony Pond. The strange thing about the LZs was that they were never officially homologated and the results were stripped from Nissan and they reverted to the L series motors again. This all blew up at the International Rally in NZ which resulted in a pile of works LZ engines being sold off really cheap to save on return frieght.!!

Re: flying dattos Well then I take my hat off to the people responsible for turning out in a genuine or near perfect replica works car..It is a very valuable car to be driving it like that. A friend in Japan has the 160J that won the East African Safari and it is wrapped in plastic in his underground garage. He has not touched it since it was wheeled out of the transporter. It still has mud on it and all the dings and scratches....His ex works 1200 Sunny coupe takes pride of place in his living room..........  The number plate on the door reads Southern Cross Rally...when was the last one of those??? |

last Southern Cross? dunno exactly, sometime in the early 80's. If not 1980 itself?
There is a group called AMSAG who are running a 'Southern Cross series' these days, based on the good old group G regs with cars from that era. Don't know much about their series, but it sounds like a good idea to me. Our PRC rules are fairly restrictive, although there is talk of opening up regs for 'classic rally cars'.
