It might be an urban legend, but I was once told that the Japanese had a superstition against black cars. You had to pay quite a large premium to get black up to the 80s, I was told. Anyone care to shed some light on this?

In Japan the most popular colour is White, it is meant to be a lucky colour. Black is rare and was used by Government for limos etc. When you look around this site there are other colours which appear factory. The JDM GXs are shown in Silver and metallic dark green. Both the sample sheets I've posted are from 70/71 so other colours may have been available in different years.

The Portugese cars were built outside of Japan. As such, the superstition about black cars does not apply.

Ther are other colours as well, in NZ we had an Orange and a Lime green, and I have seen a GX coupe the owner swears was factory Black. Any one else know of others??

Ah, I've tried to match these colors to pictures in the Photo Album.

Here's my first attempt ... Colors article.
