The theory with the jacked up bonnet is that it allows hot air to escape at the rear edge & allow even more airflow through the radiator & over the engine.

Good theory, ... however, the plenum vents are placed at the base of the windshield because this is a relatively high pressure area, & even if the fan is off, air will still flow from this area, through into the lower pressure area inside the car.

Is the pressure at the base of the windscreen enough to prevent, or even reduce the airflow from the back edge of the bonnet at speed?
I have no idea, but it's a worthwhile subject to discuss in my view.
Personally, from an efficiency point of view, If one is going to get air out of the engine bay at the top, then prefer several rows of louvers to be punched into the bonnet. This allows the hot air to get out well before the windscreen.

I think this is a good idea, particularly on a car that has reduced under-bonnet flow with a larger motor such as the CA18.

I believe the raised end will create a low pressure pocket at the rear of the bonnet greater than the relative pressure at the base of the windscreen drawing air out of the engine bay.

All I can say without trying to analyze the whole thing to much, is that there was a noticable drop in water temperature when we added the spacers at the back. It was always running slightly hot, but now it's fine

Well, that seems to support the theory that geting air out of the engine bay at the top definately has its benefits, but if this is to be a permanant feature of the finished car, then what do people think of the raised rear as an overall design element?

Is there a more attractive way of doing it? I already suggested louvers, but a fake scoop with an outlet at the rear might be another possibility.

To be honest, I don't like it much personally, it's very effective. I suggested that he adds some bonnet vents such as the ones found on some older(dare I say it) Opel models, like the Kadetts. Those would look far better, they are flat and sexy, yet very effective when removing hot air. I also don't like the horizontal slats/louvers some guys add, they look cheap.

I say go for a small power bulge like on the old american muscle cars, they were there only for the air filter but from the drivers seat you can see into the bonnet so on a 1200 it would work for letting hot air out... (does that make sense?)

it's a band-aid fix to another problem and makes a very neat car look amature

What the hell is with people putting square headlights in? Maybe I dont get it, but I always thought that was a big part of what makes Datsuns so damn sexy.

It's a South African car, so I'm guessing that it has a Bakkie grille & lights.

Whats up with the spacers under the bonnet hinges? Does having the extra rake on the bonnet generate downforce or something? lol

I do like the colour though. There's a turbo 1200 on trademe at the mo the same colour.

the stand-up bonnet helps with cooling. especially when running a boosted motor on the std. radiator, like I do.

downforce..... not so much...

 Re: Brother in law
I already bought a square grill and lights for mine, but decided afterwards that the round ones look better. So I agree.

The grill and lights will be last stuff I'll fit, so I'll see if I could fit the round ones first without to much mods, otherwise the square ones will have to make do. The main problem is with the intercooler now sitting where the grill used to go, the plastic one that takes the square lights is sits much shallower than the old one. The square lights I bought are crystal type ones, they look nice but...

Will post some pics of the crystals if you'd like...?
