Well, i posted that question a long time ago now, and I have only just read the answers. Problem is that I have been running the motor without that part installed. Oops. I will let u know if i encounter any problems. I guess its there for a reason tho....

I am not pulling the motor apart again until i blow it up!

I've left these out before too. It's a pain in the ass to have to pull it to bits again. Lukily, the sealer hadn't set so I could reuse the gaskets.

my brother put this bit on the wrong way round on my r32, after some head scratching as to what the funny noise was when we started the car, we removed the timing covers to see the lip was facing backward and had sheared 5mm off the side of my brand spankers timing belt. grrr

 Re: what is this?
The very frist engine I completely assembled myself was a A12, I assembled subs and heads but not complete before this, my dad made me do this, think I was 12... After fitting the sump, and wanting turn the engine over, my dad picked this part out from others, and put it in front of me an said I forgot to fit this, and I must figure out where it goes.

After some head scratching and deliberation, he said that it's the oil slinger, and tat I had to strip the sump ad timing cover and stuff of again to get it in.

I didn't forget to fit it when I assembled my first A14...

Now you know why a $10 second hand workshop manual is a cheap investment.

looks like the oil thrower (oil slinger) that goes on the crankshaft, inside the timing cover.

 Re: what is this?
Hallo guys -I'm looking at this topic from the archives. Which way is the correct way to fit the oil slinger to the nose of the crank?
Does the dished part face towards the timing cover or towards the timing chain?
Is it important to get the orientation right?

What does it do?
Pardon the silly questions!
Cheers and thanks for any replies
