how much should be showing?
this is a custom shaft that was supposed to fit a ute with the dellow/T50 conversion, does it look to short to you?

this might be stupid.
but is it possible your whole diff is sitting further back then the car the tail shaft was made for
where the diff mounts on the leafs maybe is further back?

are you running the original leafs on the rear

Out of one ute into another, the only thing I can think of is that as A15s into early model cars always have some some variation in the home made mount modifications maybe the engine in the old ute sat a little further back.

The length on a 'live axle' rear end needs some free length to allow for the arc that the diff travels through. But that looks to be too much. Is the rear axle sitting at normal ride height? Or are the wheels dangling in the air?

1600s and other IRS cars can get away with almost no clearance. They need just enough to cater for engine/gearbox mount movement.

My custom CA18 one has about 1 inch at normal ride height.

Do you have a H165 diff in your car? Because if it's a H145. then that might explain the difference in length.

 Re: Tail shaft yoke
im having the same problem with my A15 powered 1200 coupe it has a 60 series gearbox and a h165 diff but ive just chopped out both of my gearboxes rear bush seals and this was due to the same problem that you are having. my tailshaft is about the same length out of the gearbox so im getting it extended up that further 25cm just to take the "free play" out of it
and at $350 for the next gearbox rebuild ive decided to get mine proffesionally extended and balanced because in the long run ive had to pay $350 every 300km i travel in the car. not fun when you are 16
theres my two cents worth

the wheels are on blocks, but arent dangling free.

i think its just happened that sidedraught used different engine mounts to me, making his engine sit a bit further back (even an inch would make it acceptable play).

i used to standard brackets off the old engine and put them on the new 1, and used the ute crossmember so that it all bolted up.
sidedraught must have used a differnt set up to me.
never mind though, i know a place in town that does ute exetensions so i will get them to make it 40mm longer.

its only money....
