brakes on the car

showing offset of caliper

just a caliper pic

my fake diff assembly used for fitment

where the caliper hits the rim, grinder will solve that

the almighty mdf bracket

16mm aluminium waiting to be cut

lastly the mdf bracket on the r31 caliper bracket....on the diff

Good stuff man, if you used a smaller diameter rotor that didnt come from a disc over drum setup reckon you could get 14's over it? I dont need a handbrake.

How will the aluminium stand up to hard braking? I would look into steel maybe.

if you can find a smaller disc with a large offset like these then you could make them clear, i was looking at the dba catalouge last night and found one...but forget what it was

dont know how the alloy bracket will hold up....but 16mm steel would weigh a tonne and be really hard to cut

so ill make these and see if it stretchs the bolt holes or anything

planned on using some aircract grade 12mm aluminium for the front bracket, it seems nice and hard

cool, looks achievable so is the proper offset for the caliper gonna hit the wheel more?

i'd think thwice about grinding the wheel, the balance will be all over the place, unless you have a special way of doing it...

It's hard to work it out from the pics but if it's just the nissan sign on the caliper scraping just grind the caliper down.

Re: 300zx brakes onto r31 diff
with the standard discs the caliper will always hit the wheel, it hits just above the nissan bit...so cant really grind it off the caliper

its not much that i have to grind off the rim so it shouldnt affect the balance of them to much, nothing a few wheel weights cant fix
or i could go get it put in one of the many huge lathes i have acces to....but thats if just grinding doesnt work

any way, made one of the alloy brackets today. took all day coz the 4 inch decided to die just after i started cutting, so had to use the hacksaw all day

this is basic hacksawing

then after spending an hour or so with the diegrinder and files

and the second bracket where i left it tonight, forgot to take a pic of the complete one

Fark me, that would of been fun with a hacksaw! Are you going to tap the bracket so you dont have to use nuts?

Re: 300zx brakes onto r31 diff
ok finished them today and started on wheel clearance....only just have to grind the casting imperfectings off the back of the wheel now and the caliper will clear

so some more pics

finished bracket bolted to r31 bracket, tapped a thread then put a nut on the end...just to be safe

and the back, with safety nuts

the 2 finished brackets...as rough as they do look

and where the wheel was hitting the caliper, took to it with the file. needed less than 1mm taken off to clear the wheel enough

so now all thats left is to get the other disc lathed down and to sort out brake lines, the flexy lines will be a quarter of the cost of the conversion themselves

oh and yes hacksawing was great fun
