Here's a fix for the loose steering column which every 1200 now seems to have after 30 years... a polyethylene bushing. Sorry I didn't get a better pic.

you can still get them genuine. I just bought one from Nissan for my coupe AU$56. They even had them in stock locally.

The Nissan part number is:
48910-H1020 Column Bush
L18_B110, what does the genuine Nissan seem to be made of?

This is like a $10 fix, although you have to drill, cut and/or whittle the polyethylene yourself. It is low-friction and self-lubricating.

dd, it looks like some sort of engineering plastic (eg delrin) and encased in the threaded and castellated metal outer.

Daveman, its located in the top of the steering colum (ie steering wheel end) and unscrews.

short coupe, your meant to press the new bush into the screw part, it does say this in the Factory service book.

sounds like you got the wrong part. the replacement bush is identical and simply screws back in.

 Re: Steering column bush
^^ there are two types of replacment column bush from nissan...
the screw in type $50
the press fit type $26

i used the press fit one in my screw type column.. u have to unscrew the old bush then the new bush needs a little machining as it's a little too big in diameter to press in...

they are essentially a rubber bush with a copper sleeve.. for $26 i would rather get one from nissan then stuff around trying to make it..

well, its $0 if you have a lathe and nylon...

you won't get one made one-off for less than buying it from Nissan.

So thats why I couldnt work out what was going on with mine when I ordered it, the factory manual isnt really clear, we just pushed it into the screw part after trimming down the outside a bit.

Is it possible that I don't have one of these?

I have a 1970 sedan and pulled the steering wheel off looking for this bush but it seems there isn't one there. I have the older type smooth steering column.
