I parked the panno in the shed at my bro's place in Adelaide for a service and tune to get ready for the long haul to Melbourne. It used 4 litres of oil by Baccus Marsh.

Did the motor burn the oil or did it just disappear? The second is usually that the oil is half petrol from city running & as soon as you take for a long run the petrol evaporates, & the engine suffers due to lack of oil. I assume you did an oil change before the trip.

As a mechanic of 19 years I did pretty much all I could. I used 40/70 motor oil (4lt) and a 440ml STP oil stop smoke! What was left over from the 40/70 I put in the 440ml bottle. I drove from sailsbury heaghts to Nhill and filled up and because I was reguraly looking out the back window for signs of smoke a "assumed" it would be o.k.
Well you know what they say about assumptions. They are the mother of all f***ups.
The oil light came on and I pulled over. Topped it up with what I had left which got me to K Mart in melton.
It all went through cyl #4. The oil control rings were bound up and not working. It didn't foul the plug and it purred like a kitten getting approx 8 litres per 100km. (From Nhill to Bayswater on 1 tank and 3 litres of oil) I had 2 A15's in the back and a bunch of wheels and stuff. It was revving at approx 4000rpm the whole way which is why the oil loss escaped my attention.
Oh well. I made it home. I never expected to use 4 litres of oil in 680 odd Km! At least I hadd a 440ml paddle while I was up the perverbial creek. hahaha

Sounds like it didn't actually burn it, more like just dumped it out the tailpipe. At least you were able to get somewhere & buy some more oil.I've had that STP engine honey stop motor's with huge chunks out of a piston from smoking, it got me through the week, until i could swap engines. It did lose oil however, so it seems the STP stopped the engine giving you a sign it wasn't all good.

It's hard to say but I think you're right. There is no real evidence of burnt oil and no leaks. I think I might give the van flared guards and teardrop windows to teach it a lesson! Mabey some fluffy dice and shagpile carpet. Pimp it out cheech and chong style. Call it the love machine.

If 4 litres went past a single piston in that distance the cylinder should be drenched in oil & the plug would be drowned in it, yet you say it purred like a kitten.

It would very likely have oil spatter over the back of the slab back of the vehicle as a result of liquid droplets swirling around in the low pressure area at the back.

I suspect that Paul might be onto something as that much oil passing through an engine is too mush to just vanish without a trace, let alone through just one cylinder, & fuel diluted oil soon becomes undiluted [& reduced in volume] on a good trip once the engine warms up & the PCV is working.

b310gx has nailed it on the head. I just ripped the top end apart and found the intake manifold is a bit wet with oil and oily combstion chambers. I will put together a dunger for it so I can move it around the backyard while I start to strip the green machine. I think I will turn the orange one into a rat van. Undercoat and moon discs... Mabey then Toni Perin will love me?

So it burnt the oil, it just doesn't cause it to smoke. That's not how STP Stop Smoking Ya Barstard is supposed to work, but i can see it being cheaper to manufacture that way than making it do the job properly.

My disaster was on a Thursday night the engine started blowing heaps of smoke. Friday, Saturday & Sunday i was pit crew for a mate at the ANDRA Grand Finals at Eastern Creek. I was expecting the car to be knocked out on Saturday, so i could put a new engine in it. We were due to leave Wednesday to go to Mt Ararat in Victoria for the Australian Hillclimb Championships (same Mate, different car).We got to the finals on Sunday & they were rained out til Monday. This basically left me Tuesday to put the new engine in, which was an A14 that i'd built for my fathers 1200 wagon. Left for Victoria Wednesday, brought him back a nicely run in motor the next Tuesday.Even retorqued the head Friday morning.
