Coil Pack A12, Test Run

I drove it around the block like this.
Can I take the distributor out completely? Or does it need to stay in? |

Re: Coil Pack A12, Test Run Judging from the 'in service' appearance, the colour of the paint & the fact that Dd drove it, I'm going to guess that it's Ddgonzal's twice door sedan.
The rust inside the distributor is not a good look David.

Re: Coil Pack A12, Test Run Rust? They all look that way. In any case the electronic distributors are now archaic. For less money you can get a coil pack setup.
Yes, it's my 1200. The coil pack setup can be run by MegaSquirt or by MegaJolt. Right now it's just running by itself with fixed timing. Seems to run OK although a bit down in power as you rev it up. I only drove it around the block. I'm going with MegaJolt.

Re: Coil Pack A12, Test Run You may well be right about the future of ignition systems, but my Pertronix is in & working well, so it will stay there for the moment.
Do you plan to machine up an alloy plug for the distributor hole?
I had plans on running something similar, but using the Pertronix to serve as a crank angle sensor with a low & flat cover over the distributor should the AY12 head actually materialise.
Is there any advantage in using a coil-type that fits directly onto the plugs & use only low bulk, low voltage wiring to service them or are they too bulky themselves?

Re: Coil Pack A12, Test Run If the distributor serves no further purpose, then it can be removed entirely, ... however a suitable plug will be needed to fill the hole that remains in the block. You would also need to block the vacuum port for the distributor, or use it as a vacuum source for a water vapour system for which it would be ideal. Now that will keep the combustion chambers clean.
