Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! The wheels are 13x7`s. It probably looks faster standing still than when i drive it!!
I dont think i`ll take it to Datnats. Im not sure yet. Im coming up for a look and should be a great weekend.
I`d love to do sub 1.40`s at Winton soon. I will change the outer tierod ends for rod ends and drill out the taper in the steering arms so i can hold the two together with a bolt. I can then space the tie rod up or down to fix the bump steer prob.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! Back again, Ive put a standard A12 with turbo in the car to sort the chassis and get used to driving again. I went to Winton with a few other members and their dattos in July. I had a ball but the car handled less that perfect. Best lap time of 1.50 The rear springs were too soft and the rear shocks where bottoming out.
I hadnt touched the car again till last week when i decided to do some more testing. I added another leaf to the spring pack and raised the car about 40mm.
I did a 1.43 at winton on friday, a 7 second improvement. Still about 6 seconds away from where i would love to be! But not too disgracful.
Im going to up the front spring rate and fix the bad bump steer. Then back to the track again!

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! Another update.
Crank has been offset ground is finished being preped. Rods have been rebushed and drilled for piston cooling. Flywheel made to suit the 5.5" clutch, but is heavier than i`d hoped at 3.6kgs. Looks cool tho with lightening holes around the outside. The wiring is nearly finished but decided to go all out with sensors so this has also taken longer than anticipated. Had the tailshaft made. A1 balancing(Geelong) made it with larger competiton uni`s made by spicer and used a doner shaft from a holden.
I`ll post some more pics soon.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! ROConner, Its still a work in progress, still getting around issues as they arise. With a project like this its hard to have it fully sorted befor you begin.. Its a cbr 1100 head, custom ARP head studs all block stud holes filled and redrilled and tapped to suit head. water galleries extensivley modded. oil feed to head externaly plumbed, oil drains externally plumbed. Offset bore the block, mod crank. Reseal entire front of engine. Dry sump oil pump. Remote water pump feeding through side of block. custom cam sprockets chain and timing case. Sump made from scratch. Crank trigger ign, because there is nothing to drive the distributor anymore. Same with oil pump.. And on... And on......it goes.. Just to save 25kg`s . Time better spent than doing Sudoku`s i think!!

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! The injectors will be staged, not to sure what rpm to cut back/out the primaries. it will probably take a fair bit of sorting out.
Ive never used a setup like this before but have learned that you will get better throttle responce useing small inboard injectors (close to valve and good atomisation).
and more torque with large outboard injectors, they allow for lower duty cycle and pulse width getting enough fuel in whislt the valve is still open.
It also gives a fraction more time for the fuel to pull heat from the intake air(Vapourization).
Another trick is to keep the duty cycle at around 60% to get the best torque from sequential injenction.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! That little bit of injector theory is interesting, I'd never thought about it like that.
I guess to take it a little further there is probably some more torque to be had by using both sets of injectors through the mid range. For example if you decide that you get the best mix or cleanest burn through injecting fuel for 60% of the available time on each induction stroke then you could shoot for that number at all rpm ranges. So once the small injectors reach %60 duty then you start introducing the large ones.
You could hold the small ones at %60 duty which would result in less fuel as revs rose and compensate with the large injectors up to the point that they are both running at %60 (if the engine ever needs that much fuel?).
I'm sure I've over simplified it but you would think there would be some advantage in using both sets of injectors for some period rather than just switching from one to the other at a single point.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! Your spot on Dave there has to be a blending at some point to prevent a hesitation. There was an exellent artical in "race" mag a few issues back on how to go about tuning stagged injectors. It was a cosworth engine in an escort owed by staff at motec. It was set up on their engine dyno and the artical gave some good details. I`ll have to dig it up. I can remember that swiching from 100% inner to 100% outer was worth a lot of power.
Obviously getting the mixtures spot on is the crittical thing, but if the injector sizing/fuel presure is right you will hopefully end up with a duty cycle of no more than 60% to 65%.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! Just a bit of an update. Pistons and rods finally arrived from the U.S. This week im making an aluminium torque plate so i can get the block bored/honed. I ordered big end and main bearings today. still have to get the crank destroked. The first round of the Vic IPRA season will be at winton April 4/5 Im working on having it going by then. I might be dreaming but i have to set myself a goal.

I take it you removed the full amount of metal from around the arches, is it a maximum of 75mm to remain legal?
Do you have any photos of the rear flare?
Thanks!

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! I`ll post up a mirror close up. They came from vic motorcycle wreckers as did the cyl head. I went through their mirror tubs at the wreckers to find them. They were the best looking ones they had. I think they were suzuki units but dont quote me, and they have a slight convex shape(objects are closer than they appear).
With the front guards i only removed 65mm, and the rear have not been cut only tapped out a bit.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! that is one very tough looking coupe, i love it. just out of interest why would you go to all the trouble of putting a motorbike head on an a series when you could just use the whole motorcycle engine and gearbox? this would also mean you could use the sequential dog engagement box from the bike too.

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! Hi Wolki, The rules state that you must use a block from a datsun/nissan. and the gearbox must have a H pattern shift (non sequential) and no more than five forward gears. It definatly would have been easier to put the whole bike engine in tho...

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! I'm loving the gaurd cut look. Its a bit of a unique way of going about the flare job, and looks really good. Reminds me a bit of WRC carsand they always look tough in tarmac spec. I might try this on my 120Y coupe project...

Re: Ipra Coupe, nearly there!! Hi Harry, Yeah, its a bit different. I decided the fiberglass flares looked a bit bulky over the little 13" rims. Probably a lot less aero drag aswell.. Edit. and 280 grams lighter than a standard guard..
