And the Datsun 1000 is still tops, some 40+ years later.

Was there any other cars in the "under-$1800" market segment?

I was wondering what he meant by "japanese 'babies'", was it a reference to Japanese business men? Or maybe he was referring to the small size of the 1000 compared to even the smallest Falcons and Ramblers.

Japanese creation or Japanese Baby beats them all

Imagine the old refined Austin A series developed further today!
Even the MA09 or E10-16 not the GA16 (its too big a block to compare
to the little A & E series.) we would have 60mpg with same hp using
SOHC 3 or 4 unequal sized valve head and belt drive rather than chains.
Belts provide better economy, lighter and simpler manufacturing.

Either way a good achievement for a dinosaur yet bullet proof A series.
