Details on the Starlet engine (the leading red car in the photo) can be found in the B110 Racing History in Japan Tech Section article.

Wayne, do you have a closeup of the text beside the engine shot? I can't see all the words clearly, but I can make out:

180 HP Mosquito/Car [Toyota Starlet] DOHC 4 valve 3K engine ... One Two Finish.

The Sunny Owners Club page that has this photo shows that Starlets finished first and second. This is of course "The Day Sunny is Defeated (November 24, 1973)". Starlet was also called Publica.

Hey! I just noticed the fans sitting on top of the cyclone fence ... seems rather dangerous!

3k is the engine capacity. The 3k is around 1.2Ltrs.

It says it's the debut for the Works Starlet. Also says the 180PS DOHC 4 valve 3K engine gives it a significant advantage over Sunnys, beating them easily and making for a 1,2 finish.

When touring the Toyota history museum a few years back in Tokyo I came across the Factory developed 3K engine. Nice bit of kit even though Im a datsun guy.

 Re: Twin Cam
Ay Carumba! That is some piece of work

Toyota K Engine was very similar to the A12 (iron block/alloy head, non-crossflow, 9:1 compression). 3K was the third in the series
K - 1.1 liter
2K - 1.0 liter
3K - 1.2 liter
Advantage of shorter stroke/larger bore than A12, well at least an advantage at high RPM

3K was very common in 1973 Corolla (KE20) and Publica/Starlet (KP40). But those didn't have mechanical fuel injection
