Opened up a few gearboxes i have. Some spares, some not installed.
Interesting find...My Nismo F5C56A has wider and larger gears than this gearbox.....
Will try and post up comparison pics when i get a chance by end of the week.

56A improvements over the earlier 56L:
* each gear has an increased width by 1 to 2 mm
* needle bearing on the cluster instead of weaker ball bearing
* Ribbed case for strength
* Oil dam in rear extension housing

There may be some difference two between 1971 truck (ute) 56A and the April 1973 56A? I know that the ribs got seriously beefed up sometime later.

Might be the angle, but if you look at the ribbing pattern, you can see its the late ute 56a 4 speed gearbox.
I also have an early type 56a 4 speed and you can see the difference of the ribbing.
This one is off an 1984 ute.

I'm wondering if the wider gears are 5-speed only. Since the late-model 4-speed has slight improvements over the early 4-speed, maybe the 5-speed has wider gears than all 4-speeds?

 Re: Late 56A ute Gearbox
hey dd,

I can only talk for the nismo 56A 5 Speed close ratio gearbox i own and its comparison to the last iteration of the "strong" ute gearbox i own.The nismo box has got Bigger and larger gears than the late ute gearbox. No one gear is interchangable btw the two due to width and size difference. Also because of the two very different synchromesh systems.

Its hard to tell, and not a fact, just an assumption, but my observation is that the nismo gearbox used a different type of material for the gears.its easy to see where the price difference comes in once you compare the two gearboxes.

I and my good mate, a mechanic, had long suspected that the nismo gearbox would require an lsd type oil, different type of gear oil as compared to the 4speeds due to its porsche patented synchromesh system.
I was able to ask Kazumasa Hirota what they run on their tomei hirota b110 and they use Wakos WR75-90 for their nismo close ratio 56A 5 speeds.Thats a GL5 lsd type oil.I will look for the equivalent in australia

I have opened up an early 56a 4speeds and the late 56a 4speeds do have slightly wider gears.

I would also be inclined to believe the gx5 5 speed gearbox would have wider and larger gears than the 4 speed as these gearboxes came behind 83hp a12 gx engines as opposed to the 69hp a12 engines.
