The stock fan just plain sucks. I'm sorry, but thats how i feel. And I'm sure the convoluted tubes that feed the defrost ducts are not helping.
I used to drive this Toyota Tercel ( sorry), if you turned on the fan full blast and directed the air to only come out of the center vents... it would defog the back window . That's the kind of power I want from my heater. I just can't figure out how to do it. The is almost no room behind the heater.

A combination of opening the flipper windows and turning on the heat full, and fan full helps. Does the US model have a 2 speed fan?

Also remember that almost all 1200s are missing the vent garnishes,

Cheers,

vent garnishes
I was wondering what was meant by those. I've never seen them before ... but this past weekend, I took some plastic bits and pieces out of the demister hoses. Now I'm sure it's what was left of the "garnish".

Did the garnish somehow help defrosting, or was it just finishing trim (for looks)?

Yes, North American 1200s have the two-speed heater fan.

The trouble with opening the wing/flapper side windows is that it is cold here (same temp as a refrigerator)! I do keep them cracked a little.

what?!! a two speed fan I dont think either of my 1200s have fan speeds. Does anyone know if you can fit a later more powerful fan/heater setup out of, say, a later model nissan into a 1200?

The fan speed control switch is the heat[?] selector lever. It pulls out for speed control. Do you have a NZ owners manual? That should clarify the question on how many fan speeds you had in NZ

It took me a couple of months to figure out how to turn on my fan

There's a guy here in canberra who can get new garnishes for about $20 ithink. ( i dont actually know he gave them to me for free when i bought a bonnet cable from him.

If your interested i can look into it for you...

Please do, the Nissan ones weren't cheap from memory. When you find out more, start a new thread.

It looks a lot like a partly blocked outlet grille, or duct. You need a warm engine for the heater to work properly, so i ask, how far had you driven when you took the picture?

It does look like a blocked vent...but first....

Why is their so much moisture in the air in your car? wet floors from window leaks, are a REAL big problem in a Datto without Aircon. Also...look and check that the heater unit is not leaking!!..otherwise the heater/demister turns into a heater/humidifier.. which means a hot vapour of coolant gets coated all over the windscreen...pain in the ass to get it off!

Hope this helps!

I'd been driving for 10 minutes, and the engine was fully warm by this time. As you can see, the center of the windshield as demisted, but not the sides of the windshield.

Why so wet? It's Seattle, man, cool and damp, but not even raining. My first 1200 did exactly the same thing.

Newer cars don't have such a problem. Does the 1200 need a bigger fan? Faster fan? Reshaped duct outlets?
