Boxing it in gives heaps extra strength. In the event of a roll over the cage will try to push through the floor. With a single plate it will be easier than two plates and a boxed in section.
I have since welded in a cross bar that goes between the bottom of both main hoop bars and welded in into the trans tunnel where the big hump is.
