Re: D/Mans 1000 coupe with Vinyl roof + Landau Irons
From the forest primeval comes a somewhat sad example of another Capitol Motors special. This pic was sent to me by a fellow club member to whom I am most gratefull.

Look at the rear portion of the roof where it meets the sides. You can see the stainless trim pieces that formed the edges of the vinyl top. You can also see the three holes where the dummy Landeau Iron was fitted.

These Vinyl top specials had the vinyl applied to a fully painted car at the Datsun distributors workshop in Sydney, & this is why there is no real rust in the roof that other cars had when their vinyl tops were applied over an unpainted roof at the factory.
Sadly, this car is so crook that it will be converted to components so that another may live, so all is not lost.
It would have been nice to have another one on the road with all the fruit, to park next to though.
I have already put my hand up for these trim pieces, just in case I buy another coupe.

Yes, that's another KB10 to the left of the picture. A virtual treasure trove in this forest.
Thank you for the photo Peter.

Is that a Sunny emblem on the back? Also, is that the gas cap? (Never been up close to a 1000 coupe)

Good to see you back again.

Yes, it is a Sunny emblem, but they had Datsun badges on the front guards / fenders in Australia. Perhaps they all had them, i dont know. This is why i am looking for Sunny badges to fit to the new front panels.

The fuel cap is located behind the number plate mount. Rotating the key clockwise unlocks the trunk lid, anticlockwise unlocks the licence plate to allow access to the fuel filler

I have seen the sunny guard emblems on yahoo, and I think they would look great.

But then I also toyed with the idea of putting a Le Mans style filler cap over the emblem on the boot lid.

The "Sunny" badge went on everthing except the coupe. The badge for the coupe said "Sunny Coupe" & i would like to secure a pair too. They go low down on the side of the guard, not high where the others are,

You are very observant. The top is shown in my parts book as "D4160-00001 Leather Top", so the vinyl is shown as a replacement part, but the Landau Irons are not listed at all. It's my guess that they were dealer installed.

They add a nice touch of class i thought. Not a car for the riff-raff.

I'm stunned at how nice looking this car is -- for a car sold as a "damaged car".

A car like this needs a caring owner who'll (eventually) fix up that damage to the front corner. It's a good thing you came along and rescued it.

These KB10s were a bit fancier than KB110s, eh?

But of course they are fancier than KB110,s, & i'm not in the slightest bit biased either

They were actually pretty much the same, but this particular car seems to have been given the treatment, either as a showroom drawcard, or to customers order.

Naturally i am only going to show you the good side. The other side has scratches & minor dings that look like they came from a barbed wire fence, or something similar.
Not too bad, but the vinyl got torn slightly in two places, so it will be replaced, after the body repairs & a top quality paint job.
The interior is like new.

Re: D/Mans 1000 coupe. The factory Vinyl roof
A Landau was originally a very upmarket horse drawn vehicle, whose origins may well date back into the 1700's
They had a folding top that used a hinged "S" shaped piece on each side. This piece was both functional & decorative. When the automobile was invented, many of the earlier carriage designs were carried thorugh, including flash models with "Landau tops"

Even later still,[1930's] some cars were built with fabric roofs that did not fold. To add a bit of style, dummy Landau Irons were included to "class it up" a bit.

Those decorative pieces on the top's quarter panels are the "Landau Irons" that we speak of.
