As Phunkdoctaspock rightly pointed out to me, a cruising average of 130kph in a stock Datsun 1000 van with a 4.11 to 1 diff & 500x12 tyres is really a bit,... ummm,... optomistic

The spec page of the same brochure lists the TOP speed as 130kph.
There is a big diference between "cruising average" & "top speed"

Mr Datsun san, you should be ashamed of such fibs.

Would YOU want to be driving a stocker at 130k?

ah yes,but didn't 1000 wagons have a 4.375:1
diff ratio.the friend that helped d/man with the front half of his donor car had a 1000 wagon centre in a 1200 coupe club car,& it howled it's head off.something to do with no case hardening on the ring & pinion.

Absolutely correct.Passenger models [sedans & coupes] had a ratio of 4.11 to 1 while commercial models [utes & vans] were 4.375 to 1. I was just,... ummm errr,.. testing you.
I don't know about case hardening. I would imagine that it would be the commercial models that did have better quality gears, even if the passenger models didnt, because of the loads that they were expected to carry. Howling diffs were never a common condition in any of our Datsuns to the best of my knowledge.
