You will find most cars made in japan have their mirrors in this position!

Even my 1000 wagon come with the mirrors in this position and when my car is finished that's where they will go back!

I am not saying that this car is bad looking. Just hink it would have been better in a normal spot.

I don't know if all 1000's had them there! but 1000's were never released in Australia, they were imported by Nissan for customers upon request!

Damn sexy ute, I wont touch the mirror debate with a 10 ft barge pole. But I must say Iwouldnt be able to see jack sht if they where that far down the bonnet.

I realise most people go for looks over functionallity but you should realise by haveing the mirrors down this far reduces your blind spot in the mirrors!
Also the tend to be wide angle mirrors down there!
And I am leaving them there on my 1000 for looks more than anything!

And if you really can't see in the mirror down there how did you get your licence?
Better yet how did you find the door to your car so you could get in?

thats a hot farkin ute and the mirrors look trick there lots of brisish cars had the mirrors there on the gards and yah get less of a blind spot but ajustent is a major pain in the arse but i recon thay look classy

lol dam evel drink also door mirrors fall off from open and closeing of the door and also need more ajustment so i guess its 6 of one anf a half dozen of the other ? that make sence?

Yes phunkdoktaspok I dont know myself how I got my license either, cause I'm blind as a fukin bat, but I think your right about it cuttting out some of the blind spots, I guess I was spoiled having mirrors by the doors that I could actually see!!

I'm of two minds on the issue of fender (or wing if you prefer) mounted mirrors. I had thought of using them on one of my cars but then noticed the main problem with them. They'd get right in the way when trying to work under the hood (or bonnet if you prefer).

Yeah, they look nifty but working around them would get old FAST.

Australian Datsuns were imported by state distributors who had their own dealer network & the cars were subsequently distributed to them to sell.

They were NOT imported to individual customers order, as reported elsewhere in this thread, unless you count Capitol Motors, the NSW distributor, as the "customer"

All Datsun 1000's in NSW had two mirrors on the front guards, & this probably applied in other states as well.

My original 1968 Datsun sales brochure does not show these mirrors on any of the pictured cars at all, so they were standard fitment here, but presumably an optional fitment elsewhere.

Speaking from many years of personal experience as a Datsun 1000 driver, i can say that if you use these mirrors on a regular driver, you will find them a pain in the butt as people bump them in car parks when moving between parked cars. This means that you have to get in & out of the car to adjust them & the passenger side one is a real pain. The view is good, but not so good that i would mount them there by choice. The so-called blind spot is covered by turning your head & having a look.

Dimlight65 aand 10's & 20's are right, the fender mounted mirror is also a bloody pain when performing underhood servicing & you can just about guarantee another round of in's & out's to adjust the mirrors if you spend any time under the bonnet.

Quoting from my '68 sales brochure, under the heading "Optional Parts For All Models" it says
"Outside Back Mirror [on fender or door]" so while they were fender mounted here, door mounting is a factory option & thats where my coupe ones will be going.
They don't look all that good up front anyway. If it was such a good idea, all cars would have them out there, & door mounting gives the whole front clip a clean uncluttered look.
