 Re: Gearbox
Here's the latest.
The 56A replaced the 56 series box as a 4 speed at the end of 1200 production. From available evidence it looks like the 56A was first introduced as the 5 speed option towards the end of 1200 production as an option in the GX.

The four speed 56A & both versions of the 5 speed 56A all shared the same main gearbox case, which is what we see in this picture, so there is no way we can tell for sure just what lurks within from this photograph.

That boss protruding from the side near the letter 'A' is for a cross shaft that is used in the column shift linkage when this case is used for the 3 speed trans, however I believe that the 3 speed was discontinued at the end of 56 series production & if this is true, then this part is simply a carryover from the 56 series case from which it is derived.

If the 3 speed was indeed carried on, then this case serviced the 3, 4, & 5 speed variants.

EDIT

The diference with the 56A boxes is that they used a diferent, & stronger bearing to support the front of the cluster gear than the 56 series found in 1200's & 1000's.

 Re: Gearbox
56a gear box comes in two different ratios,
one close ratio with one to one fitfh
and standard ratio with one to one fitfh
no overdrive in either box not sure about the bearings but the gear faces are 2mm wider than standard 4sp box making the gears stronger.yes these boxes are hard to find.
I have a standard ratio and would like a close ratio box. they were sold though datsun comp here in the states not a production option. I have found some for sale here but very pricey $1,000 to 1,300 see 5sp overveiw in tech section5sp overveiw

 Re: Gearbox
I have a close ratio 5 speed gearbox in my rally car that has a straight cut gear set fitted and I dont recall ever seeing the above markings (56A) on the front housing. I have had my gearbox apart for repairs and mods maybe three or four times and would have remembered these marking if they were there. The only marking I have on the front case is the option symbol which looks a little like this #.

 Re: Gearbox
Can anybody tell me what the "options" were for a 63 series gearbox? Mine is marked 63#1, I have seen 63 series boxes marked 63#3, Thanks

Can anyone confirm, or refute this?
Yes, the (newer) ute boxes -- and all 1974-up boxes -- use larger front bearing. I'm not sure about the 5-speed. Details here: club wiki - 56-series Transmission
