To calculate what these things seem to 'cost', have a good guess at what you think it is actually 'worth',...then add a zero.

I couldn't make one myself for $500...
I could have a go at making one I suppose.

I'm sure I'd spend more than 20 hours planning/preparing for it. Better to just shell out the clams if you need it bad enough.

There is another, old school design, that seems to be readily available in Australia at [from memory] less than half this figure for unpolished [like this one] or just over half this ones price for fully polished.
That makes it MUCH better value in my book.
