 Re: 1200 ute aircon
It bears a strong resemblance to the aftermarket aircon units that were widely seen in the 70's & 80's
Is this one a factory option, or an aftermarket unit?

Can you show us the compressor instalation too? Don't forget to use the flash, even in broad daylight, to fill in the shadow areas.

I don't know if it's factory or not - I'll post a pic of the compressor installation tomorrow when the sun's still out...

It's an 84 ute, so it might just be factory... I really don't know.

I don't think that they're a factory unit(i could be wrong!), A mate of mine had the exact same set-up in his '83 hilux duel cab, And let me tell you it was a pain in the ass when we went shooting up at tamworth!!
kept on smashing me knees on the bloody thing!!!! eventually it got ripped out!
The unit works alright though! keeps the passenger nice and cool!!!

I'd kill for one of these units for my 1200. I've seen one in a 120Y wagon that looks very similar, I'd gladly trade off some passenger leg room for air-conditioning. I believe they were a factory option in the 80's model utes??

If anyone has one for sale let me know!

James

Dodgeman, do you know what other models these units came in? (i'm thinking maybe Sunny/120y) I'd love to find a complete system at a wrecker.

 Re: 1200 ute aircon
Aftermarket aircon was available at one time or another for just about anything with wheels.
There was a factory aircon for the Datsun 1000. It was listed as an accessory, but not a factory fitted option. I think that in a 1000, you could either drive the car, or pull over & just drive the aircon. It probably didn't have enough power to do both. Any factory aircon that fitted the 1200 car, should fit the ute, but it was probably not listed for the ute's as these were regarded as trucks, & trucks did not warrant the same creature comforts as the passenger model that they were derived from. This of course changed eventually, but not for a long time.

I don't think that aircon was offered in utes in Australia, but a check with a dealers parts book would reveal the truth.

Looks like the 1972 air conditioning which was a Nissan-approved dealer-installed option (not factory installed).

Here's the unit in my coupe. A few fellows here have the same underdash setup.
