Cars running on town, or oven gas are not new. There are a number of small fleets that use it all around the world. Around here it's known as CNG, or Compressed Natural Gas. It's set up much like an LPG instalation, however the stored fuel is in the form of a gas & not a liquid like LPG.

The filling point is usually the depot base [for fleets] or at home ]for individuals] There is a small compressor that draws the gas from the gas line & pumps it, under great pressure, into the storage /fuel tank. It is necessary to compress it a great deal in order to get enough in to have any kind of range.

Refilling is usually done overnight, although it does not actually take all night, it just feels like it. Range is also relatively short in most instances, which is one of the reasons that vehiles with this fuel are kept for local delivery runs, or other work that does not involve great distances.

To summarise, yes, town, or oven gas can be a usefull fuel source, but the limitations described above are likely to keep it from widespread & universal use. As for myself, i don't know if i would feel comfortable about driving around with a tank that is filled with a highly combustable gas under great pressure. Liquids burn, but dry gas under pressure,.... well, i don't want to think about it..
Oven gas is better suited to stationary engines that drive pumps, or generators etc. That way the engine can be connected directly to the town gas pipe for an unlimited fuel supply, 24 hours a day.

LPG / Propane isn't that bad of a fuel, it has about 80% the energy of gasoline and an octane rating of 130 - 150, so if you do a proper conversion and use a turbo then you could really have something.

the tanks are the issue, I suppose, there are steel tanks and fiberglass tanks, both of which are far stronger than the petrol tank you have now. Propane is supposedly difficult to ignite in the open because of the air fuel ratio it needs to combust, the tanks only carry about 300 psi.

i'm looking into propane conversion for my sunny someday.

LPG is a proven, well developed fuel & the technology to use it is well known, well understood & well liked. My previous comments relate to "oven gas" which i have taken to mean gas from the town supply. Sometimes this is "coal gas" [methane?] & over here, it is refered to as "natural gas" but either way, this household gas is dry & is not liquified when used in an automotive application.

Back in the early 70's an old man named Ak Miller was winning in the car-destroying Baja 1000 [mile] event while complying with the proposed 1975 California smog emission laws, the toughest in the world at the time. He ran LPG to do it, so it should never be regarded as being a second rate fuel after petrol /gasoline.

Winning car, smog compliant,..... it was he who i first heard of to use the phrase "Old age & treachery shall always defeat youth & enthusiasm" How true it was for him.

Doing it this way borders on the insane due to the safety risks.

In this picture I am more concerned that the line from the gas bottle is connected directly to the petrol line going into the carb!!!!!!!!!!!
You would want to keep the gas flow rate low to stop excess gas venting out the carb breather and igniting.

I Caramba!!!! as Bart would say

unless there are some parts i don't see here, he is just fogging propane into the carb, so yeah that's not good, normally there's a vaporizer and a vacuum fuel lockoff and then an actual propane carb ( impco ca100 or something ) His propane bottle isn't really spec'd for the purpose he's using it in either.

edit...
i now see he's just putting propane into where the gas used to go in the standard carb!

maybe he plugged the fuel return.

but still !!!

I too hope that a proper gas carbie is used to meter the gas, otherwise when this bonnet flips up the least of your worries will be the 2 cuts the hinges make.

And when the gas eventually pushes the fuel back along the lines into the tank and fills the tank with gas that spills out the breather into the boot .............................

I Caramba!!!!

Does no one else think this a possibility?
