 Re: A12 Injected
And i'm all ears for the block, crank, rods & pistons that are used.
It looks to be an original 1200 block, the A14 crank is mentioned, along with the Mazda pistons.
What i would be interested in is what mods, if any, were required on the crank, which rods were used, what is the bore size, & what mods were required on the pistons & /or rods.

Mazda pistons are available in sizes that will remove the bore completely in a 1200 cylinder block, so i am very interested in the "inside story" of the basic shortblock in this car.

 Re: A12 Injected
O.k. The block is stock A12 board from 72mm to 78 mm I have had no problems with this and Jeff Taylor said even 78.5 is possible.

To get the A14 crank to fit you need to machine down the counter weights just enough to fit in the block with clearance. The key to getting this to work is the pistons and rods. I used A12 rods this causes two problems.

1. A standard piston will stick out of the block on full stroke

2. when the piston is on the return stroke the piston skirt will hit the crank. So you need a piston with the gudgon pin closer to the top and a small skirt.

I went with the mazda E5 which standard is 77mm but at 40thou over is 78mm. both its deck hight and skirt where very close i had to cut small groves in the skirt to clear the crank and 10thou of the top of the piston.

Sounds good, but there is a problem the gudgon pin is 20mm where datsun is 17mm so the rods needed to get board to to 20mm. but it all went together fine. it revs to 8000rpm in every gear in every stage of the rally i have entered and never missed a beat. it puts out 100hp at wheels but with a good amount of tourqe.

I see that you have a hydro;ic clutch. What gear box are you running?

AHH yes I new the engine bay would look as good as the rest of the car does. I saw this car run at the Glouster Park Special Stages at the WRC in Perth in November, VERY impressive car to watch.

I particularly like the way the injectors are mounted, pointing straight at the valves, I've been thinking of doing this to my manifold. Good idea with the water temp sensor in the top radiator hose, I"ll do that.

A14 force, He's using a cable clutch, the two master cylinders are for the front/rear brake bias set up.

How did you go with the Sprinter diff centre, did you get it to work?

A very well prepared car, Well done!!

 Re: A12 Injected
Thanks Lemonhead. It was great fun tearing around Glouster Park at Rally Aus. I am still working on the sprinter lsd, I have bought a TRD 2 way lsd centre and have just ordered 4.77 gears for it. the sprinter centre will fit into the datsun ute housing with very little mods and the axles are a perfect fit. I am also looking at modifying the wheel bearings to double row as I find I only get 2-3 rallys out of stock ones. This should all come together in the next couple of weeks. I will post some pics of the process when I am done.

 Re: A12 Injected
Datrat_dave the aluminum box is the surge tank for the EFI. Because its a coupe i have no where else to put it.(CAMS regs) it looks a bit strang because i have made a heat sheild around a standard surge tank to keep it cool. As for cooling if you look closley you will see the oil cooler next to the radiator and i also run a 12" thermo fan. but yes at 8000rpm she still gets a bit hot.

I like it! Rally1200, what throttlebody are you using? Also, how did you come up with your runner length and plenum size? I want to do the same thing on my A14. Thanks!

Lagwagon, I didn't try to steal it, honest! I was at my parents house when I realized the auction was about to end. So I zipped home and just in time too, I had like 30 seconds to spare. I'm going to repair the manifold, not sure if I'm going to use it yet. I have a stock manifold lined up I may use. I'm not sure yet if I want to go port injected or throttle body injected. What are your ideas?

 Re: A12 Injected
The throttle body is from a FJ20 so is the dissy (optic)it gives me a good trigger for the Wolf 3D V4. This setup gives me 100Hp at the wheels @ 7500rpm everyday and is very drivable even with the full 40/80 race cam.

Nice work - its good to see that someone else cares about their rally coupe.
I have a soft spot for yellow coupes too - i like the colour.

If you are anything like me you would be a bit sad to thrash it through the forests and give it a good beating then spend hours and hours in the shed making it better or fixing anything that is broken.
Good job

I have to ask - why the strut brace when the cage is tied to the strut towers anyway?? Plenty strong enough if the cage is designed properly and all seams are stitch welded ?

 Re: A12 Injected
no sweat chow man, it was starting to get a bit pricey for me. i know you had thirty seconds left, i was winning until then, i couldn't believe it

i am making a single throttle manifold from a CA18DET, with its injectors, throttle body etc. but quads would definately be cool! i'm going turbo as well so its just easier to go single.

oh yeah, very nice setup. so what sensors did the wolf require and how hard was that to setup? is there any sort of idle control needed in the plenum?

 Re: A12 Injected
The strut brace was used before the full tower to tower cage went in, as for the wolf it comes with air temp, water temp and map sensor you need to provide TPS and crank angle. i think it is very good value as it provides fuel pump, thermo fan and has rev limit can control up to 5 injectors (4 sequential plus 1 for boost)and 2 aux input/outputs. I use one as a shift light. It also lets you control fuel and ignition every 125rpm up to 15500rpm.

As for the runner length i basically used 45mm exhaust pipe with a slight bend and tried to keep the lenght about the same as a webber carb.

With 78mm Mazda E5 pistons (tight fit in a A12 block) and shaved head about 11.5-1. As for fuel I use BP98 and sometimes booster.

 Re: A12 Injected
The Struts are custom and use Bilstien inserts from a commodore as for the tops they are Noltec. Since this photo i have made mods to the tops to increase travel by cuting out the centres and moving them out 20mm.

here is a photo of the struts

and a photo jack posted recently of the tops
