Re: B140 The code B140 is actualy incorrect, the correct code for the South African Champ is B01 & the lowline (standard) is 408. These according to Nissan in south africa is codes that they receive from the main company in Japan.
The Nissan Hardbody is called a QW, the Almera HS and so on.
Thanks for the info Janus.

Re: B140 Yes, the B140 is still in production over here in 2 models. The standard 4 speed, no frills and the 5 speed (Champ) with all the extra bells...no whistles though.

Re: B140 No the wheels are not standard, these bakkies are fitted with a 12" steel rim...still. These mags you can however request from Nissan south Africa when you buy a new model through them or an agent, but are also widely available at different wheel shops(13" with 205/tires)

Re: B140 What's the diference between a B140 & a B120? Edit, by this i mean, what changes were made to the B120 to warrant a change in model designation?

Re: B140 The Datsun 1000 is a B20, yet it has an A10 engine, & the suffix "20" is used to denote the commercial nature of a wide variety of Datsun trucks, which include the larger 620 & 720 models, so i don't think that the A14 engine is the reason for the model code change.
From '74 the B120 used a diferent dash, a diferent version of the A12, & number of diferent grilles without a model code change, so i doubt that the inclusion of square headlights would be enough of itself to do it.
120Ys got boosted brakes & in some markets they had plastic bumpers during their production life, yet they remained B210's, so there is no precedent here to go by. Even the Excelent, with its L14 was still a PB210
I had thought of these things before posing the question, & on the basis of the points noted above, i still believe that the question remains unanswered. Hmmm, now what could it be.

Re: B140 The longbed 1200 ute is known as the B122 as far as i know.
Phunkdocta Your concluding observation is very likely to be correct, but i had hoped that one of those engineers had told someone, & that particular someone was a club member.
I must confess to a little chuckle when i tried to sum up the 20, even 30 years of advancement that has been engineered into the Bakkie.. They use the same basic body & suspension [front & rear] An A series engine, sealed beam headlights [i believe] analogue instruments, a five speed, which has been an A series option [in selected models] since the early 70's, & a live rear axle with an H165 diferential. Hardly any cutting edge technology here, but surely thats why people keep buying them. Their reputation as a low cost, rugged, dependable old friend has ensured their survival through thirty five years of continuous production & any changes must surely come more under the heading of refinements, & cosmetic updates, more than anything significant in the design improvements arena.
When you're on a good thing, stick with it,.. & ..If it aint broke, don't fix it, are two timeless addages that spring to mind when i think of the now old tech Bakkie Ya gotta love 'em.
My queery originally revolved around Nissans long historic use of the suffix "20" to denote the commercial model, particularly in the smaller, passenger sized models [ie, rule out the big trucks in this discussion.] I don't think i have encountered another suffix, at least from the mid '60's, that was used on commercial models.

Re: B140 The longbed was the GB122. The shortbed was the B122. Both had square headlights starting in 1989, but round headlights prior to that. These were JDM models.
B140 is a South-Africa only model. I would be surprised that it's not because of the A14 engine. And to show it's newer than the B120. Car makers are not bound to follow previous tradition when it comes to names ...

Re: B140 I agree its probably b140 due to the a14. Just wanted to add that the c240/c340 etc were 2tonne Nissan light trucks from the 60's/70's. Seems the 40 was a bigger size of commercial back then.
edit: nice looking ute by the way. What are the rectangular cutouts at the rear of each wheel arch?

Re: B140 must be mudflaps, they're pretty hard to see. But that gives me a good sense or security that there are A series 5 speeds still being made, just gotta go wreck a few bakkies thats all

Re: B140 Quote: gives me a good sense or security that there are A series 5 speeds still being made Yes, indeed they are. However, used ones are in high demand in South Africa for putting in 4-speed trucks and sedans. So you won't find many bargains there.

Re: B140 So add all of the below together, 20 odd years of advancement, plus the fact it cant be called a 1200 ute anymore since it now has an 1.4litre engine ( do they come with a12's?) Call it a 1400 Bakkie and I think thats a good enough reason to change it to B140.
Your question is now of a nature that can only be truely answered by the Nissan design team that designated the name B140 to this model of ute.
