I was thinking the same WAGS! There is no way an engine is going to lower the rear of that ute enough to be "acceptable!".

It is interesting to see a ute with IRS! Infact it is interesting to see any 1200 with IRS!

Please bless us with the process of fitting an S13 rear end in a datsun 1200???

Thanks for being a smart ass. The reason that it is so high is for transport purposes. Shocks are temporary, do to the variety of places it has to visit (exhaust and the like).

For the other well thought of posts:
Don't recommend the IRS. It is time consuming and unless you have chassis diagrams for both vehicles it would be a nightmare. Additionally, you need to complete rear of the donor car to make life easy.

i have a complete rear end out of a silvia that i was wrecking a while back. i have seen a guy do it to a 510 wagon. he cut the middle out of the cradle and made new mounts in his car. did you mini tub your car for extra wheel clearance? i guess you can't really tell how it goes yet, but in theory it should be really nice in the handling department and tough as nails! don't be shy with the info, i doubt it very much if anyone will be copying you, it sounds like a lot of work!

I'm not worried about copies, I'm sure I wasn't the first to do it. I am just wary of less than constructive people making less than intelligent comment without the benefit of actually undertaking the task.
To help with some details, I'll give you enough rope to hang yourself. If you need more, like actual details of what I did then you can contact me by email and I can send diagrams, etc.
I didn't tub the tray, didn't think it needed it. Besides I am running 205/45 R16s on the rear and don't want any more axle height as it is. The rear was built around the wheels I have and the tyres am running, so it was all very specific, but I did built in some movement for rims and tyres just in case.
I narrowed the cradle 150mm. Removed the locating pins from the silvia and grafted them in the same place on the ute chassis (dimensionally speaking). Knowing where to put the pins is the hard part, as you need to know what wheels (axle height), wheel well clearance, tyres and width you eventually want to run and work backwards to get it in the right spot. The benefits are that I now have the right amount of suspension travel (re: not actually lowered) and have the look that it is lowered (although in the pictures the suspension isn't as it actually is). 300zx driveshafts shortened and resplined...need to use these as you can't shorten and respline the silvia ones (they taper). Have to build in suspension towers in the tray (if you close in the 2nd set of pictures you can see one of them, you can also see the painter had fun and did some airbrushing in the tray).
To be honest, it isn't difficult in terms of fabrication, it is difficult in terms planning. Like I previewed above, to get everything to work properly, I had to factor in all the things I was going to use (I imagine similarly to the factory when it was designed). I tried and managed to keep all of the angles (especially driveshafts and tailshaft) within the factory range.
Good luck if you proceed.

Michael
