This is a local Telephone exchange. It has about thirty customers, & the furthest is about 32k or 20 miles away. Just about everyone wants broadband, & we can make it work out to about 10k under ideal conditions, but usually about 5k will see it out. It's all dirt roads, Cows, Kangaroos & Wombats out here. I sometimes find interesting Datsuns on remote farms, but no KB10s yet.

For those who are out of broadbands reach, we offer ISDN as a fallback product. You get two phone numbers plus higher speed internet connection of 128Kb/s. While this isn't regarded as blinding speed, it is four or five times as fast as dial up in many rural areas & we can make it work over quite long distances.
There was no mobile service at all over large areas in this particular area due to remoteness & hilly terrain. The lack of population & traffic simply doesn't justify the investment in infrastructure in many areas at this time.

Dd, does this mean you get to get on the internet at broadband speed using a two inch screen & at cellphone pricing?

Yes, 2-inch screen and cellphone pricing. Actually, I'm not sure about the pricing. We've got one at work, but I haven't used it yet. Another guy told me he got 2mbps download with his personal account. The small screen is fine for the Datsun1200 mobile site. But a pain with the regular site.

I heard today that Telstra is offering EV-DO service. I guess that still wouldn't help anybody living out in the outlying mountains.

Bah, who wants DSL? We now have broadband cellphones in the US -- 1.5 - 3.0 mbps. It's called EVDO. Now I can get my Datsun1200.com on the go ...

... I work at a software company help desk (we make software for cell phones).

Grrrr! People that want ADSL schit me.
"I want ADSL but you wont give it to me!"
It's not that companies just dont want to give you ADSL. It's that it isn't possible at that time.
If you live 32Kms away from the nearest town... Then ADSL is probably going to be a problem.

Sorry, I work at an internet provider help desk...
