Re: A present for my lovely.
Latest Update.

Feral promised that I would be happy with the cleaning method that he recomended & he tells no fibs. I couldn't be happier.
New baffles have been made & the welding repair has now been made invisible. A new pickup has also been made & some remedial machining is all that's left to rectify Tomei's mediocre efforts in the pan bolt-hole & washer face area.
This has come up much better than I had thought it would & I am absolutely delighted.

To our member 2332owner, I still can't thank you enough. My little car would be so much less without all the help you have provided over the last few years.

This is E10's oil pan & it is the real deal for the 1200 engine. An illustration of this one, from the factory competition manual, is in an earlier post in this thread.
This is the version I originally wanted back in '81 for my 1200 GX engine.

Re: A present for my lovely.
I have lusted after one of these since 1981.
According to a well informed source, these were made by Tomei, & this one is an early version for the '74 & later blocks. It is not branded in any way & may even have been sold through the Datsunsport competition network. Thanks for all your help Feral.
Yes, it's cast alloy.

To it's previous owner, one of our club members in Japan, & fellow KB10 owner, I am most gratefull as this sets off the A13 perfectly. A little finishing work & a proper polish job & it will be perfect. Thank you very much Josh.

No doubt about it...I'm jealous

Always makes me wonder, what happened to these, and other unique moulds?

Another gratuitous pan shot.
Never mind the upside down 200B wagon in the background, I just park it that way when I grease the suspension.

polishing it certainly won't help if you actually want it to help cool the oil, rather than just look cool...

besides, it's not meant to be polished

Re: A present for my lovely.
This will help it to BE cool, not necessarily to RUN cool. For street use, I think it will run cool enough anyway, but rough castings are harder to keep clean than smooth surfaces.
Do you have an alternate suggestion that will shed heat & still be easy to clean?

The simple fact is that the whole thing is a wank, as both it's use, & cost, can not really be justified, but it's one of those rare parts that I wanted to use on this car,......because I can.
It will help the car to realise a good price when my kids sell it at my deceased estate auction.

That's a big one of those! Any idea how much extra oil it holds?

No, unfortunately, I don't know how much extra oil it holds, & I won't know untill I fit it to the engine & fill 'er up.

This is a later version of the oil pan & this one is [obviously] Tomei branded. This is the oil pan from Ferals A13 race engine & there are a number of differences, including more fins.

Ah..the Japan Connection puts his hand up

It's very nice dodgeman. I can see why you have lusted over it for 25 years.

Don't have us wishing your deceased estate sale comes soon!

Can't wait to see your project B10 Coupe cranking around a track in 2007 in Melbourne.

2007 should be a big DatNats. Sorry I won't be at the Sydney Mini-DatNats next week.

Sorry for the off topic content..post count doesn't mean much to me.

Re: A present for my lovely.
It was actually one of these that I had originally tried to find, but even in 1981 they were about $600 new & that was more than I had ever paid for a whole car, with the sole exception of my 1000 sedan..
This one is the 1200 pan, but when the A13 block & the pan to fit it came up at about the same time, I suddenly focused on a new love. I just loved the 'Buffle' plate in this one.

I would think that it would almost drag on the ground. Probably not an issue for racing, but on the street it would be a matter of time before you hit something.

It's a FWD (N10, Cherry F10 etc) sump. The engine sits higher in the car as the gearbox mounts under the motor. In a RWD it will be too low for a road car.

Re: A present for my lovely.
Rather than spend all that time and effort polishing it why dont you just get it shot blasted then give it a thin coat of high temp clear varnish. Easy to clean if that is a concern to you and still looks clean and bling.
I guess it come down to personal taste but shot blasting allow parts usually looks pretty good.

1200coupe
Thanks for your comments.

I had thought of chemicly cleaning it first to rempve all the crud from the rough cast finish, then maybe glass beading it, followed by a coating of some sort, perhaps even powder coating in a colour with polished fins, buit it takes only a chip, or scratch in the finish & eventually corrosion works its way under the coating. At least with a natural metal finish, any surface blemishes will be easier to address.
The problem with rough cast is that it seems to suck up the dirt & stuff into the textured surface, while the smooth polished surface is basicly a wipe off proposition.

This is not a high output race engine & the pan is really for satisfying the whims of an old man more than anything else, so I have no reason to expect that heat will pose any kind of problem whatsoever. Yes, it will get some minor damage to the polished finish, but that's what Autosol polish is for, so a polished surface seems to be, at this time, the lesser of the various evils in a street driver.

All constructive suggestions warmly received.

P.S. I had no plans of spending all my time polishing it up. Thats what professional metal polishers are for.

Re: A present for my lovely.
Probably the best finish is water jet blasting. It is non destructive and remove all surface corrosion but not solid metal.
Parts do not corrode as readily after treatment.

My sump was also T% heat treated before use to strengthen the alloy.

Looks very nice Dodgeman. This car will be a stunner.

Thanks for the comments Feral.
As previously discussed, I will soon be sending it to you for restoration & replacement of a couple of missing parts. You can get a good look at it then & compare it with your own alloy pan.

I will send you an e-mail within a day or two.

A question for general comment.
Should I get a finned alloy rocker cover to match?

Well I actually have one of these factory oil pans,P/N 11110-H2310 (the one on the drawing from the race manual). It has been stored for quite some time and is a little filthy right now,but I can clean it up and post a few pics if anyone is interested. There is a threaded plug on one side that could be used for an oil temperature sender I guess, but does someone know the purpose of that cover on the other side?

I never did figure out what the side cover was for, but speculated that it was for inspection or cleaning purposes. It would be good to see your pan & have some pictures for my collection.
E-mail sent.

Why would you bother cleaning it if you going to put a cover?
Thats how you would answer that isnt it?

Cheers, Steve Corleone.

Re: A present for my lovely.
I knew I would get your attention with this Dodgeman.....but since I found myself a B110 last year I certainly will use all the nice parts I have on that car,so sorry to disappoint you but nothing will be leaving Belgium!!I cleaned the oil pan up a bit and put some pics in the album, along with a few other things I have.I have an A12 block bored to 74mm with A10 flat top pistons waiting for the car to be restored, and with a GX head and cam plus a pair of SU's I should have enough to cope with modern traffic.Promised myself the car would be on the road this year but I also know it often takes three times longer than planned ,so we will see how it ends......

Nice, is that cast alloy?
Is this a nismo/datsun comp part?
