R-Fasts L20B install progress. benny 2006/3/2 2:13 Tell a friend 5330 34 0.00 (0 votes)
Here is a shot of the L20B install on R-Fasts' race car. Progress pic Number 1. All comments are welcome [as long as you are nice]. Should be a nice competative package.... |

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. How does it go for bonnet clearance? I had to notch out the Xmember on my 310 to get the motor low enought to shut the bonnet. Looks very smart. Job very well done I say. I bet you're fizzing to "try it out".

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Hey A14, I used a 1200 crossmember with fabricated towers as mentioned earlier, but also removed an unnecessary bump in the sump which gave us another 15mm or so. It fits under the bonnet quite well even though it looks huge (compared to the A14 anyway). Cheers

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. I had to modify the sump too. A notch was removed from the x member, then the sump had to reshaped to clear the drag link.

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Wow, this looks great, and now its got me thinking of an L swap!
This is probably the most natural of swaps, seeing that the factory put L14s in. But you make it look like art.

the A series look almost anemic compared to the L series!...

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Thanks Mawler, dd and Buff Carbies are balanced now and it sounds tough Tried hard to get a "factory" kind of look with some pretty bits to feed the ego A lot of time and frustration has gone in but I am more than happy with the result! I will post more detailed pics when finished showing gearstick location and gearbox mount etc. Cheers

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. What's the story on those strut tower rings? Was the lip cut off the tower, and those are strenghtheners.

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. noltec camber /castor adjustment plates, modded to lower the front end a bit more. They would normally be mounted underneath the tower.

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Yes Benny is quite right - I mounted them on top to reduce the amount of lift to the front of the car. The steel rings under the plates serves two purposes. One is to space the plates above the strengthening lip so I didn't have to cut it off, the other is that they will become a strut brace when I can get off my butt to make it!! Dyno day is booked for this Sat. so fingers crossed for that "modest" power increase Cheers

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Thanks guys ... Harry, there's nothing too exotic here - just a strong motor with a wideish torque band Probably nothing like some of the claims we hear about but I will let you know after the dyno run - 130ish rwhp is a conservative goal Craig, no threat from my low budget backyard outfit - but I will take you up on that alliance (only true 1200 owners know what is OEM and what is not ) Cheers

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Goddamn that looks nice, the black and yella look great together, with just a touch of anondised blue thrown in for good measure. This is how Datsun should have made 1200's in the factory

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Thanks B120, I'm using B/B 5 speed (because I had one) but I have made the gearbox mounts as multi drilled rails so I can have other options down the track. Used 1200 crossmember, fabricated new towers and reworked the original bluebird engine brackets. This allows a strong and simple cortina engine mount to be used to cut down on flex. I have used the standard bluebird radiator but removed the side brackets and remodled the inlets slightly. The biggest surprise was being able to bolt my 1200 alternator straight in so no major wiring changes A lot of fiddling but from what Harry has said about his L18 it should be a bit of fun !!! Cheers

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. A thing of beauty is a joy forever. From this angle, it looks like it was meant to be there right from the factory.
If it run's as good as it looks, it's a winner straight up. Good one.

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. Thanks Dodgeman, here's hoping it goes as good as it looks I'm sure "The Boss" would think it a whole lot of unnecessary effort - being a very practical guy It was good to meet up with you last weekend - nice to meet fellow members & thanks very much for the diff - you are a true gentleman! Cheers

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. The diff? You did me a favour by taking it off my hands, so you are most welcome to it. It was good to meet you & have a chat. Now I can see what you were describing, & yes, I suspect that "the Boss" would have left off the decorative touches. It's all to lull the others into a false sense of security i'm sure.

Re: R-Fasts L20B install progress. looks a lot neater than my engine bay! Once i'd driven my ute with the L20b in it, the old a series looked awful slow... and my L20's stock... Should be great fun if my utes anything to go by.. enjoy!
