The car was prepared by Ewold van Bergen, Nissan-Datsun SA's competition director. He raced a Datsun in the 1961 Monte Carlo rally, and was intimately involved in the development of the famous Datsun 411 Bluebird SSS (Special Sport Sedan),

Ode Denker Anderson/Charlotte Heuse Datsun GX won the Lady's category of the BNU Rally, June 1973. The BNU was held over some of the roughest and tightest roads in South Africa and Mozambique.

What model is that grille & why are ther headlight rims missing? What's with the flares, are they add on's, or has the body been modified?

The grille is a standard GL/GX item.

As for the flares and the rest, this is a full-on rally car circa 1973.

What on earth is that ghastly device on the front wheel?
Oh,... let me guess, it's the drive for the accurate distance & speed measuring equipment in the car.

Some items of interest.....
seriously raised suspension
13"[?] wheels
Single external mirror,.. door mounted.
Cutouts in the bottom edge of the front apron for the lights, now that's something you don't see very often.

You are probably right.... but is there any possibility that it could be an automatic tyre inflator/deflator?

In South America they use these devices on busses and the like
