Got these on ebay for $2.10 from the UK.  Shipping was more than the cost of the parts!  I think they were for a Mini but oh well, they fit my SU's.  I was going to shell out $40 for a set from aptfast.com but I held out and it paid off.

Never seen anything like that before, I am guessing that a RamFlow filter fits over the whole thing.

it might be a bit of a stupid question, but see the holes in the backing plate up the top, when the foam filter goes on the air can get sucked in through there unfiltered. What have people done to fix this? For now I have a bit of electiral tape (well a whole bunch) stuck over it but am worried that it might get sucked in.

Yes the ramflo type filter will fit around it (I hope). I haven't cut out my filters yet. I didn't know Ramflo makes custom hemispherical filters for this type of filter so I bought sheets from a motorcycle shop that I will cut to fit. One day I will probably swap them with the made to fit ones and get the filter housing chromed (or junk them for K&Ns). Oh and the rusted plate is the backing plate for the Ramflo and is mounted behind the stubs in case it's not clear.

As for the holes, I'm going to try to find some hi-temp grommets to fill them. I will use one as a clean air source for my crank case vent if I can figure out how to attach it. If I find matching grommets I'll let you know where I found them.

Here's a close-up with the covers on but no filter elements:

They look like 1973-up Hitachi HJE38W side-draft carburetors, factory Datsun carbs.

Yeah they from an SSS 510 rebuilt by ZTherapy.

Oops I see what you're saying - I should have said HITACHI not SU. It's a bad habit I picked up hanging out in Z car forums :) - calling these SU's. The Z guys never refer to Hitachi "SU's" as Hitachi carbs.

I bought some filter elements for mine and they cost $15 for the pair, courried to my door that afternoon. They arnt actually hemispherical, they are flat circles that you just push and mould into place. Takes about 2 minutes. If you are going to be using it in dusty places or are lazy, you should oil it. I used motorbike stuff. Give the "lynx corp" a call on 02 9767 4800.
