Here's an idea: It's easy enough to polish aluminum with a wire brush on a drill. Then just paint the pulley.

DD polishing is not that easy in the tight spaces. It takes several different grades of buffing wheels with cutting compound and best done while all bits are apart to avoid bits and pieces in the workings.
However the final results look like jewerely for men.
