Now to reveal the type of gearbox, it's a Toyota 21R gearbox, which came with most if not all Cressidas. However, if you don't recognise the bell, that's becaue it's not original. Some eterprising induvidual has started casting and machining them, so they ensure a straight bolton to the gearbox and engine. Everything lines up, you use the ballpoint and cluch fork from the FWD gearbox, and the spiggot sits the exact deapth into the crankshaft. If you look closely you can see 21R cast into the bell. I'll try to get a close up when the lot has been taken appart for spraypainting, but it also fit all of the other 4A variants, including 20V, and you use the original starte from all of them. Cool hey...

What's the advantage of this gearbox over a T50? (or whatever came in the AE86s... not sure on the designation)

I'm unfamiliar with the T50 gearboxes, but most everybody uses the 21R gearbox for basically any conversion done here in SA, and from what I've read it seems to be able to handle more power than the T50. As mentioned, they come from the RWD Cressidas. I've personally seen them used on Nissan V6's, Ford V6's, Isuzu V6's and diesels, various Toyota diesels and petrols, Mazda rotaries and a whole range of other engine makes. They are extremely strong and reliable, and have been know to handle 350kw almost indefinately. As mentioned, there is a person that worked out all the moulds, and they are moulding conversion bell's for a straight bolton, to all or most of the above mentioned engines. These gearboxes are also plentifull, so if it does break, you can get spares in no time, or just buy another for about R2000, that's +/-$444 Australian, and the conversion bell's mostly sell for R900, which is about $200 Australian. As you can see, for a small price you could do a bolt on rather than go through the whole adaptor plate thing. Most clutch and brake places around here, also make the matching plates, to match your standard flywheel and pressureplate, and the splines on the gearbox. The main advantage is reliability, and for me another is size.

Thanks... T50s (am I right with that designation?... The ones that came in AE86s?) are plentiful here, but I was just curious about your setup as I picked up a 20V 2 days ago and am starting to collect parts for RWD conversion into one of my cars.

I will try to get the proper designation for my gearbox, because it might very well be a T50, but we call it the 21R over here. As I said, they came with most of the Cressidas, and more specifically with the 6 cylinders. Will have more pics up by this weekend.

Isn't a 21R an engine indentification code?? eg CA18?? So the engine may be called an 21R but that does not say what kind of gearbox you have....Its probably not the T-50 but the next box up unofficially dubbed the celica box??

The engine is a 16V 4age??? My 20V does not have that kind of clearance around the sway bar.. Do you know if the sumps are interchangeble??

21R is Toyota R engine

The gearbox most R engines used is the W50/W55/W56/W57/W58/W59 series. Strong enough even for six-cylinder engines

The gearbox most A engines (e.g. 4A-GE) is the T50 5-speed. It's plenty strong for 4A-GE twin-cam
