Why such small indicators on South African 1200s?

US laws were/are strange. The side lights aren't even indicators, they're just side marker lights.
If you couldn't see the whole car from the side, then the side lights aren't going to make much difference.
The very existance of the rear ones is a US-only item I believe.
The rest of the world seem to have got by using the smaller ones & 1200 carniage on the roads doesn't seem to have been a problem, so their fitment & use would seem to be a bit odd & un-necessary.

FWIW-The big side marker lights are also reflectors.
Are the small ones used on the front in other countries reflectors?

Not half as strange as the ADR. For example, in USA we can fit any size engine we want. Another example, we can cut springs. And we don't see carnage on the road because of either of these. Australia ADR seems oddly restrictive compared to USA regulations.

USA regulation is based on two principles:
1. Highway Traffic Safety. As d-man points out, some of those laws have had limited success, but others undeniably set the lead (e.g. seat belts required for 1968).
2. Emissions Control

Another factor (the one that resulted in our hideous bumpers from 1973 to late 80s) was the "Cost Savings Act". But it didn't save any money, per government report.

I wouldn't be surprised if fewer 1200s here have minor "fender benders" at night than in other countries. The large reflectors make USA cars quite obvious even in the dark, parked along the street or on the shoulder. Newer cars even have reflectors on the inside of the doors.

Back in September of 1974 I was in Fiji for a couple of weeks. I had a rental car for a few days & it was supposed to be a nice new 120Y, but it never showed up at the pickup point. Instead, about a half hour late, a green 1200 two door showed up, just like this one, probably without hubcaps as a result of the rough roads, but I couldn't really remember for sure.

I was disapointed at first because I wanted the new model, but I liked the shape anyway. It was only a short distance down the road & I decided that I wanted one & I have been a Datsun fan ever since.

Thanks for the picture & it was the green colour that brought back the memories.

Over here new bumpers are like $350. So this guy bought a Camaro split bumper for like $150 and put it on. Looks good, doesn't it? And saves some money.

The twin-exhuast style was very popular in the early 80s, it was supposedly Italian style.
