xf alternator in 120y help! | Subject: xf alternator in 120y help! by a12datto120y on 2014/8/6 9:14:09
hi
I have installed a ford xf internaly regulated alternator in my 1974 120y and its wired up and charges at a max of 13.7volts and everything works but my charge light.
it dosnt turn on when i turn the key on before starting the engine.
the way i wired it is from my T connector i took out the white/black wire and hooked that onto the lamp pin on the back of the alternator. the other yellow wire on the T is just left hanging as my alternator only has one connection for the dash.
then i disconected the external regulator and jumped the wires. my regulator harness in the engine bay has 4 wires
white 12+all the time
white blue 12volt with key on
white black no voltage (goes to T connector the one i connected to the alternator dash light)
and a Black ground.
so i first jumped the white/blue to the white/black dash light wire but the car wouldnt turn of and the charge light didnt work
so i tried the white wire and car turns of and charges at 13.7 volts but still no dash charge light.
so what could be causing this? it charges fine (is 13.7 max ok?) and everything works but the charge light.
when i had the original alternator the light would never turn of even when started and kept glowing brighter as rpm went up then sparks flew out the alternator thats why i went to the xf alternator.
also i checked all the fuses and there fine so is the charge bulb also when i jumped the white and white/blue wire the idle went down so i guess it sensed the battery needs charging so it must be wired right?
Thanks!
