He's remove all the non-necessary gear (EGR valve, emissions control vacuum switches etc).

Here you can see the fuel rail and the rising rate (?) fuel regulator. The fuel regulator is hooked directly to manifold vacuum.
Note the coolant holes below the ports. Only one side flows. The other side is a solid casting, and coolant flows out a heater hose on the front end of the manifold. I think I might be able keep mine heated on the non-GX A12 by feeding it in the vacuum switch port (back end of manifold), and out the heater hose port (in other words, not using the coolant ports in the head.
