Re: 351 into datto

when i put the chev in my 1200,i put a gemini steering rack in front of the crossmember.
i made brackets that i welded to the crossmember, and swapped my complete strut, brake and lower steering arm assemblies from left to right.then the steering arms face the front, and lined up with the rack.i shortened the gemini rack ends and then re-threaded them to suit.the front radius arms needed to have a bend pressed into them to clear the tie rod ends when the suspension is on the bump stops.
i then modified the standard 1200 steering colum to suit.this was quite involved and in a nutshell i cut the outside of the colum right at the steering box and made a plate out of steel, using the original rubber locator as a guide.drilled a hole in the plate the same size as the outer diameter of the colum and welded it to the colum.then with that fitted to the car and the inner steering shaft coming out i made a short steering shaft with two small uni-joints to join the colum and rack together.
as a word of warning, this was just one of many major modifications that is needed to make a V8 conversion work in a datsun.others include, relocating the brake master behind the dash, exhaust, front suspension, transmission, diff, rear suspension, body strength and about 1000 other jobs.
and i was working with a small block chev and a powerglide.i did not cut my firewall or tunnel to make it fit,but a clevo and C4,is a much bigger engine and box.
