as a matter of fact james i have had the same symptoms when i had my stock 1200 in my ute.
3rd gear did go first. when it did i changed it into 3rd quickly but i wasnt racing or anything like that, but as soon as i was off the clutch it just made a big teeth chattering noise and
more or less ended it useless.
but the nafter about a week driving without 3rd gear first gear played up by making noises and 2nd followed. then that was it, 1st and 2nd dropped out so it was out with the box and in with
a new one.
as of the end of the week my ute is coming off the road and being stripped down.
this includes the gearbox thats in it. plus i do have a 5 speed in the shed.
anyways thats the low down on your box james.
mind you mine went when it was behind a stock A12. so you must really be driving yours very sedately.
